ലോകപ്രശസ്തനായ ആദ്യകാല ബ്രിട്ടീഷ് ചിത്രകാരന്മാരിൽ ഒരാളാണ് 1697-ൽ ജനിച്ച വില്യം ഹോഗാർഥ്.സാമൂഹ്യപ്രാധാന്യമുളള വിഷയങ്ങളായിരുന്നു ഹോഗാർഥ് ചിത്രരചനയ്ക്ക് തിരഞ്ഞെടുത്തത്. .ചിത്രകഥാരൂപത്തിൽ ആറോ എട്ടോ രംഗങ്ങളുളള അത്തരം ചിത്രങ്ങൾ അദ്ദേഹത്തെ പെട്ടെന്ന് പ്രശസ്തനാക്കി.അവയിൽ ഏറേ ശ്രദ്ധേയമായ ഒന്നാണ് വിവാഹദൃശ്യങ്ങൾ എന്ന ചിത്രപരമ്പര. ഒരു പാവപ്പെട്ട അദ്ധ്യാപകനായിരുന്ന റിച്ചാർ‍ഡ് ഹോഗാർഥിന്റെയും ആൻ ഗിബ്സൺന്റെയും മകനായിട്ടായിരുന്നു ഹോഗാർഥ് ജനിച്ചത്.ശിൽപകലയിലും മിടുക്കനായിരുന്ന ഈ കലാകാരനാണ് ബ്രിട്ടനിൽ ആദ്യത്തെ ചിത്രകലാ അക്കാദമി തുടങ്ങിയത്.
