മൈനയോളം വലിപ്പമുള്ള കാക്കമരംകൊത്തിയുടെ^[2] ^[3]^[4]^[5] (ഇംഗ്ലീഷ്:Great black Woodpecker or White-bellied Woodpecker) വാലിനു മീതെയും വയറ്റത്തുമുള്ള വെള്ളപ്പാടുകളുളൊഴിച്ചാൽ ദേഹമാസകലം കറുത്ത നിറമാണ്. പൂവന്റെ നെട്ടി തൊട്ട് പിൻ‌കഴുത്തുൾപ്പെടെ നല്ല ചുവപ്പുനിറമായിരിക്കും. കൊക്കിനു താഴെ താടിക്കു മുകളിലായി ഒരു ചുവന്ന വരയും കാണാം. പിടയ്ക്ക് പിടലിയിൽ മാത്രമേ ചുവപ്പു നിറം കാണുകയുള്ളൂ.കാക്കയെ പോലെ പറക്കുന്നത് കൊണ്ടാണ് ഇവയ്ക്ക് കാക്ക മരംകൊത്തി എന്ന പേര് കിട്ടിയത്. ജോഡികളായിട്ടാണ് ഇരതേടാനിറങ്ങുന്നത്. മനുഷ്യരിൽ നിന്നും മറ്റ് ജീവികളിൽ നിന്നും ഒതുങ്ങിക്കഴിയാൻ കാക്ക മരംകൊത്തിയ്ക്ക് പ്രത്യേക സാമർഥ്യമുണ്ട്. കാട്ടുനിവാസിയായ ഈ മരംകൊത്തിയെ തിരിച്ചറിയുക അവയുടെ കീ..കീ..കീ എന്ന ഉച്ചത്തിലുള്ള ശബ്ദം കേട്ടാണ്.
