വെയിൽസിൽ നിന്നുമുള്ള ഒരു പ്രകൃതിശാസ്ത്രജ്ഞനും, സഞ്ചാരിയും, എഴുത്തുകാരനും പുരാവസ്തുതൽപ്പരനുമായിരുന്നു തോമസ് പെന്നന്റ് (Thomas Pennant). (14 ജൂൺ 1726 – 16 ഡിസംബർ 1798). ജീവിതകാലം മുഴുവൻ അദ്ദേഹം തന്റെ കുടുംബതറവാടായ വെയിൽസിലെ ഫ്ലിന്റ്‌ഷെയറിലാണ് ജീവിച്ചത്.

പ്രകൃതിശാസ്ത്രകാരനെന്ന നിലയിൽ അദ്ദേഹം വലിയ കൗതുകത്തോടെ ഭൂമിശാസ്ത്രം, സസ്യങ്ങൾ, മൃഗങ്ങൾ, പക്ഷികൾ, ഉരഗങ്ങൾ, ഉഭയജീവികൾ, മൽസ്യങ്ങൾ തുടങ്ങി ജീവനുള്ള എല്ലാത്തിലും ശ്രദ്ധചെലുത്തിയിരുന്നു. കൂടാതെ കണ്ടതിനെപ്പറ്റിയും കേട്ടതിനെപ്പറ്റിയുമെല്ലാം അദ്ദേഹം വിവരങ്ങൾ ശേഖരിച്ചുസൂക്ഷിച്ചിരുന്നു. യൂറോപ്പിൽ നിന്നും പുറത്തേക്കുപോയിട്ടില്ലെങ്കിൽക്കൂടി അദ്ദേഹം ബ്രിട്ടീഷ് സുവോളജി, നാൽക്കാലികളുടെ ചരിത്രം, ആർട്ടിക്കിലെ ജീവശാസ്ത്രം, ഇന്ത്യയിലെ ജീവശാസ്ത്രം എന്നിങ്ങനെയെല്ലാം പുസ്തകങ്ങൾ രചിച്ചു. പ്രസിദ്ധരായ അന്നത്തെ ശാസ്ത്രകാരന്മാരിൽ പലരുമായുമദ്ദേഹം എഴുത്തുകുത്തുകൾ നടത്തിയിരുന്നു. പുരാവസ്തുതൽപ്പരൻ എന്ന നിലയിലുള്ള അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ വലിയ ശേഖരത്തിൽ പലതും ഇന്ന് നാഷണൽ ലൈബ്രറി ഓഫ് വെയിൽസിൽ ലഭ്യമാണ്..
