ഇന്ത്യയിലെ പ്രമുഖനായ ഒരു ഫുട്‌ബോൾ കളിക്കാരനായിരുന്നു തെൻമാടം വർഗീസ് (തെൻമാടം മാത്യു വർഗീസ്) - (English:Thenmadom Mathew Varghese )എന്ന തിരുവല്ല പപ്പൻ. പ്രതിരോധ നിരയിലാണ് ഇദ്ദേഹം കളിച്ചിരുന്നത്. 1948ലെ ലണ്ടൻ ഒളിമ്പികസിൽ പങ്കെടുത്ത ഇന്ത്യൻ ഫുട്‌ബോൾ ടീമിൽ അംഗമായിരുന്നു. 1940കളിലും 1950കളിലും ഇന്ത്യൻ ടീമിലെ പ്രതിരോധ നിരയിലെ പ്രധാന കളിക്കാരനായിരുന്നു ഇദ്ദേഹം. 1948 മുതൽ 1962 വരെ ഇന്ത്യൻ ദേശീയ ടീമിന്റെ ഭാഗമായിരുന്നു.[1]

ഫുട്‌ബോളിൽ ആദ്യത്തെ മലയാളി ഒളിമ്പ്യനാണ് ഇദ്ദേഹം. [2] ടാറ്റ ഫുട്‌ബോൾ ടീമിന്റെ താര കളിക്കാരനായിരുന്നു. 1952 വരെ ഈ ടീമിന്റെ ക്യാപ്റ്റനായിരുന്നു. 1951ലും 1962ലും ഏഷ്യൻ ഗെയിംസിൽ സ്വർണ്ണ മെഡൽ നേടിയ ഇന്ത്യൻ ടീമിൽ അംഗമായിരുന്നു. തിരുവല്ല പോലീസ്, ബ്രിട്ടീഷ് ഇന്ത്യയിലെ ട്രാവൻകൂർ സ്റ്റേറ്റ് എന്നിവക്ക് വേണ്ടി കളിച്ചു. പിന്നീട് ബോംബൈയിലേക്ക് കുടിയേറി, ടാറ്റയ്ക്ക് വേണ്ടി കളിച്ചു.[3]
