ആഭ്യന്തര മന്ത്രാലയത്തിന്റെ കണക്കനുസരിച്ച് ഇന്ത്യയിലെ ജനങ്ങൾക്ക് കാര്യമായ ഭീഷണിയാണ് ഇന്ത്യയിലെ തീവ്രവാദം. മറ്റ് രാജ്യങ്ങളുമായി താരതമ്യപ്പെടുത്തുമ്പോൾ ഇന്ത്യ നിരവധി തീവ്രവാദ ഗ്രൂപ്പുകളെ അഭിമുഖീകരിക്കുന്നു. ഇന്ത്യയിൽ കണ്ടെത്തിയ തീവ്രവാദത്തിൽ ഇസ്ലാമിക ഭീകരത, വിഘടനവാദ തീവ്രവാദം, ഇടതുപക്ഷ ഭീകരത, കാവി ഭീകരത[5] എന്നിവ ഉൾപ്പെടുന്നു[6][7][8]. ഭീകരത ഏറ്റവും കൂടുതൽ ബാധിച്ച രാജ്യങ്ങളിലൊന്നാണ് ഇന്ത്യ.[6][9]
മതപരമോ രാഷ്ട്രീയമോ പ്രത്യയശാസ്ത്രപരമോ ആയ ലക്ഷ്യങ്ങൾക്കായി ഒരു ജനതയെയോ സർക്കാരിനെയോ ഭയപ്പെടുത്തുന്നതിനായി ആസൂത്രിതമായി അക്രമമോ ഭീഷണിപ്പെടുത്തലോ നടത്തുന്നതാണ് തീവ്രവാദത്തിന്റെ പൊതുനിർവചനം.[10][11]
കാശ്മീരിലെ ഇസ്ലാമിക് ഗ്രൂപ്പുകൾ, പഞ്ചാബിലെ സിഖ് വിഘടനവാദികൾ, അസമിലെ വിഘടനവാദ ഗ്രൂപ്പുകൾ എന്നിവയിൽ നിന്ന് ഇന്ത്യ സ്ഥിരമായി നിരവധി ഭീകരാക്രമണങ്ങളെ നേരിടുന്നു.[6] ജമ്മു-കശ്മീർ, കിഴക്കൻ-മധ്യ, തെക്ക്-മധ്യ ഇന്ത്യ (നക്സലിസം), വടക്കുകിഴക്കൻ ഇന്ത്യ എന്നിവയാണ് ദീർഘകാല തീവ്രവാദ പ്രവർത്തനങ്ങളുള്ള പ്രദേശങ്ങൾ. 800 ഓളം തീവ്രവാദ സെല്ലുകൾ രാജ്യത്ത് പ്രവർത്തിക്കുന്നുണ്ടെന്നാണ് 2008 ഓഗസ്റ്റിൽ ദേശീയ സുരക്ഷാ ഉപദേഷ്ടാവ് എം.കെ. നാരായണൻ അഭിപ്രായപ്പെട്ടത്.[12] രാജ്യത്തെ 608 ജില്ലകളിൽ 205 എണ്ണം തീവ്രവാദ പ്രവർത്തനങ്ങളാൽ ബാധിക്കപ്പെട്ടുവെന്ന് 2013-ലെ കണക്കു വ്യക്തമാക്കുന്നു.[13] 2012-ൽ ലോകത്താകമാനം 11,098 പേർ ഭീകരാക്രമണങ്ങളാൽ മരണമടഞ്ഞതിൽ ഇന്ത്യയിൽ 231 പേർ കൊല്ലപ്പെട്ടുവെന്ന് ഡിപ്പാർട്ട്മെന്റ് ഓഫ് യുണൈറ്റഡ് സ്റ്റേറ്റ് പറയുന്നു. ഇത് ആഗോളമായി നടന്ന ഭീകരാക്രമണ മരണത്തിന്റെ 2 ശതമാനം ആണെന്നു കണക്കാക്കുന്നു.[3]
ഇന്ത്യയിലെ ഭീകരതയെ പാകിസ്ഥാൻ പണം മുടക്കി നടത്തുന്നതാണെന്ന് ഇന്ത്യയിലെ മാധ്യമങ്ങൾ റിപ്പോർട്ടു ചെയ്യുന്നു. എന്നാൽ പാക്കിസ്ഥാൻ എല്ലായ്പ്പോഴും ഈ ആരോപണങ്ങളെ നിഷേധിക്കുകയും പാക്കിസ്ഥാനെതിരായ തീവ്രവാദത്തിന് ഇന്ത്യ ധനസഹായം ചെയ്യുന്നുവെന്ന് ആരോപിക്കുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നു.[14] 2005 ജൂലൈ മുതൽ 707 പേർ കൊല്ലപ്പെടുകയും 3200 പേർക്ക് പരിക്കേൽക്കുകയും ചെയ്ത ഭീകരാക്രമണത്തെക്കുറിച്ചുള്ള വിവരങ്ങൾ 2016 ജൂലൈയിൽ ഇന്ത്യാ ഗവൺമെന്റ് പുറത്തുവിട്ടു.[15]
