വിൻസെന്റ് വാൻഗോഗ് ഒലിവു മരങ്ങളുടെ 15 ഓളം പെയിന്റിംഗുകൾ ചിത്രീകരിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്,1889- ൽ കൂടുതൽ ചിത്രങ്ങളും വിശുദ്ധ-റെമി-പ്രോ-പ്രൊവെൻസ് കമ്മ്യൂണിലാണ് നിർമ്മിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നത്. അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ അഭ്യർത്ഥനപ്രകാരം, 1889 മെയ് മുതൽ 1890 മെയ് വരെ അദ്ദേഹം ഒരു അഗതിമന്ദിരത്തിൽ താമസിച്ചുകൊണ്ട് അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ ഉദ്യമങ്ങൾക്ക് അനുവാദം ലഭിച്ചപ്പോൾ അവിടത്തെ തോട്ടങ്ങളെയും ചുറ്റുമുള്ള മതിലുകൾക്കരികിലുള്ള ഒലിവു മരങ്ങൾ, സൈപ്രസ്സ്, ഗോതമ്പ് പാടങ്ങൾ എന്നിവയെ ചിത്രീകരിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു. ദ സ്റ്റാറി നൈറ്റ് മലനിരകളിലെ ലാൻഡ്സ്കേപ്പിലുള്ള ഒലിവ് മരങ്ങളുടെ ചിത്രീകരണം വാൻഗോഗിൻറെ പരിപൂർണ്ണത നിറഞ്ഞ ഒരു ചിത്രം ആയി കണക്കാക്കപ്പെടുന്നു.[3]
വാൻഗോഗിൻറെ ഒലിവ് മരങ്ങൾ എന്ന ചിത്രത്തിന് പ്രത്യേക പ്രാധാന്യം ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു. 1889 മേയ് മാസം വരെ ജീവിച്ചിരുന്ന വിശുദ്ധ ജീവിതവും, ജീവിതചക്രവുമുള്ള ഒരു കൂട്ടരുടെ ജീവിതത്തെയും ഗെത്ത്സേമനയിൽ ക്രിസ്തുവിനെക്കുറിച്ചുള്ള തന്റെ വികാരങ്ങളെയും 1889 നവംബർ വരെ പ്രതീകവത്കരിക്കാൻ അദ്ദേഹം ശ്രമിച്ചു.
