നേപ്പാളിലെ കാഠ്മണ്ഡു താഴ്വരയിലെയും അതിന്റെ ചുറ്റുമുള്ള പ്രദേശങ്ങളിലെയും ചരിത്രപരമായ നിവാസികളും[2] കൂടാതെ അതിന്റെ ചരിത്രപരമായ പൈതൃകത്തിന്റെയും നാഗരികതയുടെയും സ്രഷ്ടാക്കളുമാണ്[3] നെവാർ (/nɪˈwɑːr/;[4]Newar: नेवार, എൻഡോണിം: Newa; Newar: NEVA, Pracalit script:𑐣𑐾𑐰𑐵𑑅‎) അല്ലെങ്കിൽ നേപാമി[5] പ്രാഥമികമായി ഇന്തോ-ആര്യൻ, ടിബറ്റോ-ബർമൻ വംശങ്ങളുടെ ഭാഷാപരവും സാംസ്കാരികവുമായ ഒരു സമൂഹമായ നെവാറുകൾ ഹിന്ദുമതത്തെയും ബുദ്ധമതത്തെയും പിന്തുടരുന്നത് നേപ്പാൾ ഭാഷയെ അവരുടെ പൊതു ഭാഷയായി കണക്കാക്കുന്നു.[6] നെവാറുകൾ തൊഴിൽ വിഭജനവും ഹിമാലയൻ താഴ്‌വരകളിൽ മറ്റൊരിടത്തും കാണാത്ത പരിഷ്‌കൃത നാഗരികതയും വികസിപ്പിച്ചെടുത്തിട്ടുണ്ട്.[7] നേപ്പാളിലെ മതം, സംസ്കാരം, നാഗരികത എന്നിവയുടെ യഥാർത്ഥ സംരക്ഷകരായി നെവാറുകൾ അവരുടെ പുരാതന പാരമ്പര്യങ്ങളും ആചാരങ്ങളും തുടരുകയും സ്വയം അഭിമാനിക്കുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നു.[8]സംസ്കാരം, കല, സാഹിത്യം, വ്യാപാരം, കൃഷി, പാചകരീതി എന്നിവയിലെ സംഭാവനകൾക്ക് നെവാറുകൾ അറിയപ്പെടുന്നു.[9] ഇന്ന്, UNDP പ്രസിദ്ധീകരിക്കുന്ന വാർഷിക മാനവ വികസന സൂചിക പ്രകാരം നേപ്പാളിലെ ഏറ്റവും സാമ്പത്തികമായും സാമൂഹികമായും മുന്നേറിയ സമൂഹമായി അവർ സ്ഥിരമായി റാങ്ക് ചെയ്യുന്നു.[10] നേപ്പാളിലെ 2011-ലെ സെൻസസ് അവരെ രാജ്യത്തെ ആറാമത്തെ വലിയ വംശീയത/സമൂഹമായി കണക്കാക്കുന്നു. രാജ്യത്തുടനീളം 1,321,933 നെവാർമാരുണ്ട്.[11]

കാഠ്മണ്ഡു താഴ്‌വരയും ചുറ്റുമുള്ള പ്രദേശങ്ങളും നേപ്പാൾ മണ്ഡലയിലെ മുൻ നെവാർ രാജ്യമായിരുന്നു.[12][13] നേപ്പാളിലെ മറ്റ് പൊതു ഉത്ഭവ വംശീയ അല്ലെങ്കിൽ ജാതി ഗ്രൂപ്പുകളിൽ നിന്ന് വ്യത്യസ്തമായി, വംശീയമായി വൈവിധ്യമാർന്ന, മുമ്പ് നിലനിന്നിരുന്ന ഒരു രാഷ്ട്രീയത്തിൽ നിന്ന് ഉരുത്തിരിഞ്ഞ ഒരു അവശിഷ്ട സ്വത്വമുള്ള ഒരു ദേശീയ സമൂഹത്തിന്റെ ഉദാഹരണമായാണ് നെവാർസിനെ കണക്കാക്കുന്നത്.[14]ചരിത്രാതീത കാലം മുതൽ നേപ്പാൾ മണ്ഡലയിൽ ജീവിച്ചിരുന്ന വൈവിധ്യമാർന്ന ജനവിഭാഗങ്ങളുടെ പിൻഗാമികളായതിനാൽ അതിനുള്ളിലെ നെവാർ കമ്മ്യൂണിറ്റിയിൽ വംശീയവും ജാതിയും മതപരവുമായ വൈവിധ്യത്തിന്റെ വിവിധ ധാരകൾ അടങ്ങിയിരിക്കുന്നു. വിവിധ കാലഘട്ടങ്ങളിൽ എത്തിയ അതാത് ഇന്ത്യൻ മഹാജനപദത്തിൽ നിന്നുള്ള ലിച്ചാവിസ്, കോസല, മല്ലസ് (എൻ) തുടങ്ങിയ ഇന്തോ-ആര്യൻ ഗോത്രങ്ങൾ (അതായത് വജ്ജി, കോസല, മല്ല (I) എന്നീ ലിച്ചാവികൾ) അവരുടെ ഭാഷയും രീതികളും സ്വീകരിച്ചുകൊണ്ട് പ്രാദേശിക ജനതയുമായി ലയിച്ചു. എന്നിരുന്നാലും, ഈ ഗോത്രങ്ങൾ അവരുടെ വൈദിക സംസ്കാരം നിലനിർത്തുകയും അവരുടെ സംസ്കൃത ഭാഷകൾ, സാമൂഹിക ഘടന, ഹിന്ദു മതം എന്നിവ കൊണ്ടുവരികയും ചെയ്തു. അത് പ്രാദേശിക സംസ്കാരങ്ങളുമായി സമന്വയിക്കുകയും നിലവിലെ നെവാർ നാഗരികതയ്ക്ക് കാരണമാവുകയും ചെയ്തു.[3] 1768-ൽ ഗൂർഖ സാമ്രാജ്യം കീഴടക്കിയതോടെ നേപ്പാൾ മണ്ഡലയിലെ നെവാർ ഭരണം അവസാനിച്ചു.[15][16]

"നേപ്പാൾ", "ന്യൂവർ", "ന്യൂവൽ", "നേപ്പാർ" എന്നീ പദങ്ങൾ ഒരേ പദത്തിന്റെ സ്വരസൂചകമായി വ്യത്യസ്ത രൂപങ്ങളാണ്, കൂടാതെ ചരിത്രത്തിലെ വ്യത്യസ്ത സമയങ്ങളിൽ വിവിധ രൂപങ്ങളുടെ ഉദാഹരണങ്ങൾ ഗ്രന്ഥങ്ങളിൽ പ്രത്യക്ഷപ്പെടുന്നു. നേപ്പാൾ പഠിച്ച (സംസ്കൃതം) രൂപവും നെവാർ എന്നത് സംഭാഷണ (പ്രാകൃത) രൂപവുമാണ്.[17] 512-ൽ കാഠ്മണ്ഡുവിന്റെ പടിഞ്ഞാറുള്ള താഴ്‌വരയായ ടിസ്റ്റംഗിലെ ഒരു സംസ്‌കൃത ലിഖിതത്തിൽ "നേപ്പാളുകാർക്ക് ആശംസകൾ" എന്ന വാചകം അടങ്ങിയിരിക്കുന്നു. ഇത് രാജ്യത്തെയും ജനങ്ങളെയും സൂചിപ്പിക്കാൻ "നേപ്പാൾ" എന്ന പദം ഉപയോഗിച്ചിരുന്നുവെന്ന് സൂചിപ്പിക്കുന്നു.[18][19]
