"ചെറിയ വിരൽ" എന്നർത്ഥമുള്ള ഡച്ച് പദമായ പിങ്ക് എന്നതിൽ നിന്നാണ് "പിങ്കി" എന്ന വാക്ക് ഉത്ഭവിച്ചത്.1808-ൽ സ്‌കോട്ട്‌ലൻഡിലാണ് പിങ്കി എന്ന പദം ആദ്യമായി രേഖപ്പെടുത്തിയിട്ടുള്ളത്. [2] സമകാലിക ബ്രിട്ടീഷ് ഇംഗ്ലീഷിൽ ഈ പദം ഫലത്തിൽ അജ്ഞാതമാണെങ്കിലും അമേരിക്കൻ ഇംഗ്ലീഷിൽ ഇത് സാധാരണമാണ്.[1]
