1846 മുതൽ 1947 വരെ ബ്രിട്ടീഷ് സാമ്രാജ്യത്തിനു കീഴിൽ മഹാരാജാവിന്റെ ഭരണത്തിലുണ്ടായിരുന്ന ഒരു നാട്ടുരാജ്യമാണ് കശ്മീർ ആൻഡ് ജമ്മു (ജമ്മു-കശ്മീർ).[1] 1846-ൽ ഒന്നാം ആംഗ്ലോ സിഖ് യുദ്ധത്തിലെ വിജയത്തെത്തുടർന്ന് ഈസ്റ്റ് ഇന്ത്യ കമ്പനി കശ്മീർ താഴ്വര പിടിച്ചെടുക്കുകയുണ്ടായി. യുദ്ധച്ചെലവ് തിരിച്ചുപിടിക്കാൻ മുസ്ലീം ഭൂരിപക്ഷപ്രദേശമായ കശ്മീർ താഴ്വര ജമ്മുവിലെ ദോഗ്ര ഭരണാധികാരിയ്ക്ക് അമൃത്‌സർ ഉടമ്പടി പ്രകാരം വിൽക്കുകയായിരുന്നു. ഇതോടെയാണ് ജമ്മു-കശ്മീർ രാജ്യം നിലവിൽ വന്നത്.

ഈ കരാറനുസരിച്ച് രാജ്യം "സിന്ധു നദിയ്ക്ക് പടിഞ്ഞാറും രവി നദിക്ക് കിഴക്കുമുള്ള പ്രദേശത്ത്" ആയിരുന്നു. ഇതിന്റെ വിസ്തീർണ്ണം 80900 ചതുരശ്ര കിലോമീറ്റർ ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു.[2] പിന്നീട് ഹൻസ, നഗാർ, ജിൽജിത് എന്നീ പ്രദേശങ്ങൾ രാജ്യത്തോട് കൂട്ടിച്ചേർക്കപ്പെട്ടു.

ഇന്ത്യാവിഭജനസമയത്ത് മഹാരാജാവ് ഹരിസിങ് ഇന്ത്യയോടും പാകിസ്താനോടും ചേരാതെ ഒറ്റയ്ക്കുനിൽക്കാനാണ് ആഗ്രഹിച്ചത്. സ്വിറ്റ്സർലന്റ് പോലുള്ള ഒരു സ്വതന്ത്ര രാജ്യമായി തന്റെ രാജ്യത്തെ ഇന്ത്യയും പാകിസ്താനും അംഗീകരിക്കണമെന്ന് ഹരിസി‌ങ് ആഗ്രഹിച്ചു.[3]
