കേരളത്തിൽ സുലഭമായി കാണപ്പെടുന്ന വിഷമില്ലാത്ത ഇനം പാമ്പാണ് ചേര (Indian rat snake,). മഞ്ഞചേര, കരിഞ്ചേര തുടങ്ങി പല പേരുകളിൽ ഇത് അറിയപ്പെടുന്നുണ്ട് എന്നാൽ ഇവ എല്ലാം ഒരേ സ്‌പീഷീസിൽ  പെടുന്നതാണ് .(ശാസ്ത്രീയനാമം: Ptyas mucosa) കൃഷിഭൂമിയിലുള്ള എലികളെ ഭക്ഷിക്കുന്നതിനാൽ കർഷകന്റെ മിത്രം എന്നാണ് കേരളത്തിൽ ഇത് അറിയപ്പെടുന്നത്. മൂർഖനാണ് എന്ന് തെറ്റിദ്ധരിച്ച് ഇവ വളയെധികം കൊല്ലപ്പെടാറുണ്ട്. വിഷമുണ്ടെന്ന അന്ധവിശ്വാസം മൂലം “മഞ്ഞച്ചേര മലന്നുകടിച്ചാൽ മലയാളനാട്ടിൽ മരുന്നില്ല” എന്ന ഒരു നാടൻ ചൊല്ലുപോലും ഉണ്ട്. ഒത്ത ചേരപ്പാമ്പിന് 2മീറ്റർ വരെ നീളം ഉണ്ടാകാറുണ്ട്. തല മൂർഖന്റേത് പോലെ നീണ്ടിരിക്കും. കണ്ണുകൾക്ക് സാമാന്യത്തിലേറെ വലിപ്പം. മിഴികൾക്ക് സ്വർണ്ണ നിറമാണ്. മഞ്ഞയോ മങ്ങിയ കറുപ്പുനിറമോ ശരീരത്തിന്. ശൽക്കങ്ങൾ നിറഞ്ഞ അരികുകളിൽ കറുപ്പുനിറമുണ്ടാകും.

അഫ്ഗാനിസ്ഥാൻ, ബംഗ്ലാദേശ്, ഇന്ത്യ, ചൈന, ശ്രീലങ്ക, നേപ്പാൾ, മ്യാമർ, പാകിസ്താൻ (സിന്ധ് പ്രദേശം),തായ്ലന്റ്, വിയറ്റ്നാം തുടങ്ങിയ ദക്ഷിണേഷ്യൻ രാജ്യങ്ങളിൽ കണ്ടുവരുന്നു.

രൂപഘടന

Description from Boulenger's Fauna of British India: Reptilia and Batrachia volume of 1890:

Snout obtuse, slightly projecting;

eye large; rostral a little broader than deep, visible from above;

suture between the internasals shorter than that between the prefrontals;

frontal as long as its distance from the end of the snout, as long as the parietals or slightly shorter;

usually three loreals;

one large preocular, with a small subocular below;

two postoculars;

temporals 2+2;

8 Upper labials, fourth and fifth entering the eye;

5 Lower labials in contact with the anterior chin shields, which are shorter than the posterior; the latter in contact anteriorly.

dorsal scales in 17 rows at midbody, more or less strongly keeled on the posterior part of the body.

Ventrals 190-208;

anal divided;

subcaudals 95-135, divided.

Brown above, frequently with more or less distinct black crossbands on the posterior part of the body and on the tail;

young usually with light crossbands on the front half of the body.

Lower surface yellowish;

the posterior ventral and the caudal shields may be edged with black.

രാജവെമ്പാലയുടെ പ്രധാന ഇരയാണ് ചേര.

ഇണചേരൽ

ചേരയും ഇണചേരുന്നത് മൂർഖനുമായിട്ടാണെന്ന് ഒരു തെറ്റായ വിശ്വാസം ജനങ്ങൾക്കിടയിലുണ്ട്. ഇവരണ്ടും രണ്ട് കുടുംബത്തിൽ നിന്നായതിനാൽ ഇത് അസാധ്യമാണ്. ചേരയുടെ ഇണ എപ്പോഴും ചേരയായിരിക്കും. തുല്യവലിപ്പമുള്ള പാമ്പുകൾ തമ്മിൽ കെട്ടിപ്പുണർന്ന് ഇണചേരുന്നത് അസുലഭമായിട്ടാണെങ്കിലും കാണാവുന്ന ഒരു കാഴ്ചയാണ്. ഒരേ സ്പീഷ്യസ്സിൽ പ്പെട്ട ആൺ പാമ്പുകൾ തമ്മിൽ അധികാരപരിധി നിലനിർത്താനായി പോരടിയ്ക്കുന്ന ചിലസമയങ്ങളിൽ ഇണചേരലായി തെറ്റുദ്ധരിക്കാറുണ്ട്.

പെരുമാറ്റം

ജനസമ്പർക്കമുള്ളിടങ്ങളിലും ചേരയെ കാണാം. മൂർഖനെപ്പോലെ ഫണം വിടർത്താനാവില്ലെങ്കിലും ചില സമയങ്ങളിൽ ചേരയെ കണ്ടാൽ മൂഖർഖനാണെന്ന് തെറ്റുദ്ധരിക്കാറുണ്ട്. ആകൃതിയിലുള്ള ഈ സാദൃശ്യം ഉപകാരമാണെങ്കിലും മനുഷ്യർ ചേരയെ തല്ലിക്കൊല്ലുന്നതിന് ഇതൊരു കാരണമാകാറുണ്ട്. ശത്രുക്കളെ തുരത്താൻ ദുർഗന്ധമുണ്ടാക്കാനും ചേരയ്ക്ക് കഴിയും.മലാശയത്തിലെ ഗ്രന്ഥിയിൽ നിന്ന് കറുപ്പുനിറത്തിലുള്ള സ്രവം വിസർജിച്ചും ഇവ ശത്രുക്കളെ തുരത്താറുണ്ട് .
