ശാസ്ത്രത്തിന്റെയും ശാസ്ത്രാവബോധത്തിന്റെയും വളർച്ചയെക്കുറിച്ചുള്ള പഠനമാണ് ശാസ്ത്രചരിത്രം. പ്രാകൃതികശാസ്ത്രവും സാമൂഹികശാസ്ത്രവും ഇതിലുൾപ്പെടുന്നു. ലോകത്തെക്കുറിച്ച് അനുഭവസിദ്ധവും താത്ത്വികമായതും പ്രായോഗികമായി ലഭിച്ചതുമായ അറിവുകളുടെ സഞ്ചയമാണ് ശാസ്ത്രം. ശാസ്ത്രജ്ഞർ നിരന്തരമായ നിരീക്ഷണങ്ങളും പരീക്ഷങ്ങളും പ്രവചനങ്ങളും ഉപയോഗിച്ച് ഈ സഞ്ചയം പുഷ്ടിപ്പെടുത്തുന്നു.

ശാസ്ത്രജ്ഞൻ എന്ന വാക്ക് തന്നെ 19 ആം നൂറ്റാണ്ടിൽ വില്യം വെവേൽ ആദ്യമായി ഉപയോഗിച്ചതാണ്.[1] അതിനുമുൻപ് ശാസ്ത്രാന്വേഷകർ അവരെ പ്രാകൃതിക തത്ത്വചിന്തകർ എന്ന് വിശേഷിപ്പിച്ചിരുന്നു. മധ്യകാലത്തിനു മുൻപ് തന്നെ പ്രായോഗികമായ ശാസ്ത്രാന്വേഷണങ്ങൾ നടന്നിരുന്നു. അതേ കാലത്തു തന്നെ ശാസ്ത്രീയ സമീപനവും ഉപയോഗപ്പെടുത്തിയിരുന്നു. ആധുനിക കാലത്തിന്റെ തുടക്കത്തിലാണ് ആധുനിക ശാസ്ത്രം വളർന്നു തുടങ്ങിയത്, പ്രത്യേകിച്ച് യൂറോപ്പിലെ ശാസ്ത്രീയ നവോത്ഥാനകാലമായ 16 , 17 നൂറ്റാണ്ടുകളിൽ.[2] പരമ്പരാഗതമായി ശാസ്ത്രചരിത്രകാരന്മാർ ശാസ്ത്രത്തിന്റെ ആദ്യ കാൽവെപ്പുകളും കൂടി ഉൾക്കൊള്ളും വിധമാണ് ശാസ്ത്രത്തെ നിർവചിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നത്.[3]

തെളിയിക്കപ്പെട്ട തത്ത്വങ്ങൾ അന്ധവിശ്വാസങ്ങളെ മാറ്റി അവിടെ പ്രതിഷ്ഠിക്കപ്പെടുന്ന പുരോഗനോന്മുഖമായ അറിവിന്റെ വളർച്ചയാണ് പതിനെട്ടാം നൂറ്റാണ്ടുമുതൽ ഇരുപതാം നൂറ്റാണ്ടിന്റെ അവസാനം വരെ നടന്നുകൊണ്ടിരുന്നത്. ഇക്കാലത്തെ ശാസ്ത്രചരിത്രത്തിൽ മുന്നിൽ നിൽക്കുന്നത് പ്രാകൃതിക ശാസ്ത്രങ്ങളും ജീവശാസ്ത്രവുമാണ്. ചരിത്രത്തിന്റെ സമീപകാല പുനർവായനകളിൽ പരസ്പരം മത്സരിക്കുന്ന ശൈലികളളെ ബൗദ്ധികവും സാംസ്കാരികവും സാമ്പത്തികവും രാഷ്ട്രീയവുമായ മൂശയിൽ സ്ഫുടം ചെയ്യുന്നതായി വിവരിക്കുന്നു. എന്നാൽ ഈ ചിന്താസരണിക്ക് ചരിത്രകാരന്മാരിൽനിന്നു തന്നെ എതിർപ്പും നേരിടുന്നുണ്ട്. കാരണം അവർ ശാസ്ത്രത്തെ തുല്യതയില്ലാത്ത ശൈലികളുടെ സ്വരച്ചേർച്ചയില്ലാത്ത വ്യവസ്ഥയായി വിവക്ഷിക്കുന്നു. ഇത് യഥാർത്ഥ മുന്നേറ്റത്തിന് പകരം മുന്നേറ്റത്തിന്റെ പ്രതീതി മാത്രം ഉളവാക്കുന്നതുകൊണ്ടാണ് എതിർപ്പുകൾ നിലനിൽക്കുന്നത്.[4]
