നീർക്കുതിരകളുടെ മൺ മറഞ്ഞു പോയ ഒരു ഉപവർഗം ആണ് ഹിപ്പോപ്പൊട്ടാമസ് ഗോർഗോപസ്. ഹിമയുഗത്തിന് തൊട്ട് മുൻപ്പ് ആണ് ഇവയ്ക്ക് വംശനാശം സംഭവിച്ചത് . ആഫ്രിക്ക ആണ് ജന്മദേശം എങ്കിലും ഇവ യൂറോപിലേക്ക് ദേശാന്തരഗമനം നടത്തുകയുണ്ടായി ഇവിടെ നിന്നും ആണ് ആദ്യ ഫോസ്സിൽ കിട്ടിയിടുള്ളതും.[1]
