ZnAl2O4 എന്ന രാസസൂത്രത്തോടുകൂടിയ ഒരു അപൂർവ ധാതുവാണ് ഗാഹ്‍നൈറ്റ്. ഇത് പച്ച, നീല, മഞ്ഞ, തവിട്ട് അല്ലെങ്കിൽ ചാരനിറത്തിലും ഒക്റ്റാഹെഡ്രൽ ആകൃതിയിലുമുള്ള പരലുകൾ സൃഷ്ടിക്കുന്നു. ഓസ്‌ട്രേലിയയിലെ ബ്രോക്കൺ ഹിൽ പോലുള്ള വലിയ സൾഫൈഡ് നിക്ഷേപങ്ങളിൽ ഇത് പലപ്പോഴും സ്പാലറൈറ്റിന്റെ ഒരു ഉപോൽ‌പന്നമാണ്.
1807-ൽ സ്വീഡനിലെ ഫലു ഖനി, ഫലുൻ, ദലാർന, എന്നിവിടങ്ങളിൽ ഇത് ആദ്യമായി വിവരിക്കപ്പെട്ടു. മാംഗനീസ് മൂലകം കണ്ടെത്തിയ സ്വീഡിഷ് രസതന്ത്രജ്ഞനായ ജോഹാൻ ഗോട്‌ലീബ് ഗാൻ (1745–1818) എന്നയാളുടെ സ്മരണാർത്ഥമാണ് ഇതിനെ നാമകരണം ചെയ്തത്. ഇതിനെ സിങ്ക് സ്പിനെൽ എന്നും വിളിക്കുന്നു.
