ഇസ്‌ലാമിക പണ്ഡിതയും സോഷ്യോളജിസ്റ്റുമായിരുന്നു മൊറോക്കൊയിൽ ജനിച്ച ഫാത്തിമ മെർനീസി (1940 – 30 നവം: 2015). പരമ്പരാഗത ഇസ്‌ലാമിനേയും പുരോഗമന സ്ത്രീപക്ഷവാദത്തേയും സമഞ്ജസിപ്പിയ്ക്കുന്ന ബൗദ്ധിക സംഭാവനകളിലൂടെയാണ് മെർനീസി ശ്രദ്ധയാകർഷിച്ചത്.[1] പാരീസിലെ സോർബൺ സർവ്വകലാശാലയിൽ നിന്നും രാഷ്ട്രമീമാംസയിൽ ബിരുദം നേടിയ മെർനീസി 1974ൽ കെന്റുക്കിയിലെ ബ്രാൻഡിസ് സർവ്വകലാശാലയിൽ നിന്നും സോഷ്യോളജിയിൽ ഡോക്ടറേറ്റ് കരസ്ഥമാക്കി. തുടർന്ന് മൊറോക്കോയിലേക്ക് തിരിച്ചു വന്ന മെർനീസി റബാറ്റിലെ മുഹമ്മദ് അഞ്ചാമൻ സർവ്വകലാശാലയിൽ മെത്തഡോളജി, ഫാമിലി സോഷ്യോളജി എന്നീ വിഷയങ്ങളിൽ പ്രൊഫസറായി പ്രവർത്തിച്ചു.[2]

സ്ത്രീകളുടെ അവകാശങ്ങൾക്ക് വേണ്ടി പ്രവർത്തിച്ചിരുന്ന മെർനീസിയുടെ ഇസ്‌ലാം, സ്ത്രീ എന്നീ വിഷയങ്ങളിലുള്ള കൃതികൾ ശ്രദ്ധേയമായി. ‘ബിയോണ്ട് ദി വെയ്ൽ’, ‘ദി വെയിൽ ആന്റ് ദി മേൽ എലൈറ്റ്’, ‘ഇസ്‌ലാം ആന്റ് ഡമോക്രസി’, തുടങ്ങിയ കൃതികൾ ഫാത്തിമ മെർനീസിയുടേതായുണ്ട്.
