ട്രിനിഡാഡയിലെ ഒരു പരിസ്ഥിതി പ്രവർത്തകനും രാഷ്ട്രീയക്കാരനുമായിരുന്നു ഈഡൻ ആർതർ ഷാൻഡ് (14 സെപ്റ്റംബർ 1939 - 20 ജനുവരി 2021) . ട്രിനിഡാഡിലും ടൊബാഗോയിലും പാരിസ്ഥിതിക നിലവാരം സ്ഥാപിക്കുന്നതിനായി അദ്ദേഹം പ്രവർത്തിച്ചു.

നാഷണൽ അലയൻസ് ഫോർ റീകൺസ്ട്രക്ഷന് കീഴിൽ സെന്റ് ആൻസ് വെസ്റ്റിന്റെ (1987-1991) എംപിയായി ഷാൻഡ് സേവനമനുഷ്ഠിച്ചു. ഭക്ഷ്യ ഉൽപ്പാദനം, സമുദ്ര ചൂഷണം, വനം, പരിസ്ഥിതി മന്ത്രാലയത്തിൽ പാർലമെന്ററി സെക്രട്ടറിയും (1987-1988) വിദേശകാര്യ, അന്താരാഷ്ട്ര വ്യാപാര മന്ത്രിയും (1988-1991) ആയിരുന്നു.

ആദ്യകാല ജീവിതം[തിരുത്തുക]

1939 സെപ്റ്റംബർ 14-നാണ് ഷാൻഡ് ജനിച്ചത്. 1963-ൽ ആബർഡീൻ യൂണിവേഴ്‌സിറ്റിയിൽ നിന്ന് ഫോറസ്ട്രിയിൽ ബിഎസ്‌സി (ഓണേഴ്‌സ്)[1], 1968-ൽ യൂണിവേഴ്‌സിറ്റി ഓഫ് ബ്രിട്ടീഷ് കൊളംബിയയിൽ നിന്ന് എംബിഎയും നേടി.[2]

1963 മുതൽ 1965 വരെ ട്രിനിഡാഡിയൻ ഗവൺമെന്റ് ഫോറസ്ട്രി ഡിവിഷനിൽ ഷാൻഡ് ജോലി ചെയ്തു. എംബിഎ പൂർത്തിയാക്കിയ ശേഷം 1968 മുതൽ 1972 വരെ വാൻകൂവറിൽ ഫോറസ്റ്റ് ഇക്കണോമിസ്റ്റായി ജോലി ചെയ്തു. തുടർന്ന് ട്രിനിഡാഡിലേക്ക് മടങ്ങി.[1] 1979-ൽ,[3] സിറ്റിസൺസ് ഫോർ കൺസർവേഷന്റെ സ്ഥാപക അംഗങ്ങളിൽ ഒരാളായിരുന്നു ഷാൻഡ്.[4]

1980-കളിൽ, ട്രിനിഡാഡ് ആൻഡ് ടൊബാഗോ ടെലിവിഷനിൽ ഫീഡ്‌ബാക്ക് എന്ന പേരിൽ യുവാക്കളെ കേന്ദ്രീകരിച്ചുള്ള ഒരു ടോക്ക് ഷോ ഷാൻഡ് അവതരിപ്പിച്ചു.[4]

രാഷ്ട്രീയം[തിരുത്തുക]

1986-ൽ, നാഷണൽ അലയൻസ് ഫോർ റീകൺസ്ട്രക്ഷൻ (NAR) പാർട്ടിയുടെ സ്ഥാനാർത്ഥിയായി ജനപ്രതിനിധി സഭയിലെ സെന്റ് ആൻസ് വെസ്റ്റ് സീറ്റിൽ നിന്ന് ഷാൻഡ് വിജയിച്ചു. [5]പീപ്പിൾസ് നാഷണൽ മൂവ്‌മെന്റിന്റെ (PNM) നിലവിലെ സ്ഥാനാർത്ഥിയെ പരാജയപ്പെടുത്തി. [6] പുതുതായി സ്ഥാപിതമായ NAR 1962-ൽ സ്വാതന്ത്ര്യത്തിനു ശേഷം ദേശീയ പാർലമെന്റ് തിരഞ്ഞെടുപ്പിൽ വിജയിക്കുന്ന ആദ്യത്തെ പ്രതിപക്ഷ പാർട്ടിയായി.[7]

ഷാൻഡ് 1987 ജനുവരി 12-ന് സത്യപ്രതിജ്ഞ ചെയ്തു. ഭക്ഷ്യോത്പാദനം, സമുദ്ര ചൂഷണം, വനം, പരിസ്ഥിതി മന്ത്രാലയത്തിൽ പാർലമെന്ററി സെക്രട്ടറിയായി അദ്ദേഹം ആദ്യം നിയമിതനായി.[8] എന്നിരുന്നാലും, ബോധപൂർവമായ വനം കത്തിക്കുന്നതിനുള്ള നിയന്ത്രണങ്ങൾ നിർദ്ദേശിച്ചതിനെത്തുടർന്ന് 1988-ൽ അദ്ദേഹത്തെ ഈ പോർട്ട്ഫോളിയോയിൽ നിന്ന് നീക്കം ചെയ്തു.[9][10]തുടർന്ന് അദ്ദേഹം വിദേശകാര്യ, അന്താരാഷ്ട്ര വ്യാപാര മന്ത്രിയായി. [4] സിൽവിയ കാക്കലും മറ്റ് സംരക്ഷകരും ചേർന്ന് അദ്ദേഹം 1988-ൽ കരീബിയൻ ഫോറസ്റ്റ് കൺസർവേഷൻ അസോസിയേഷൻ (CFCA) സ്ഥാപിച്ചു.[11]

ജമാഅത്ത് അൽ മുസ്ലിമീൻ അട്ടിമറി ശ്രമത്തിനിടെ ബന്ദികളാക്കിയ എംപിമാരിൽ ഒരാളായിരുന്നു ഷാൻഡ്.[4]

1991 ലെ തിരഞ്ഞെടുപ്പിനായി സെന്റ് ആൻസ് വെസ്റ്റ് പോർട്ട് ഓഫ് സ്പെയിൻ നോർത്തിൽ ലയിച്ചു. ഷാൻഡ് വീണ്ടും തിരഞ്ഞെടുപ്പിന് വേണ്ടി നിന്നില്ല.[12]

ആക്ടിവിസം[തിരുത്തുക]

പാർലമെന്റ് വിട്ടശേഷം, എൻവയോൺമെന്റൽ ഓഡിറ്റേഴ്‌സ് രജിസ്‌ട്രേഷൻ അസോസിയേഷനിൽ (യുകെ) അസോസിയേറ്റ് എൻവയോൺമെന്റൽ ഓഡിറ്ററായി ഷാൻഡ് സർട്ടിഫിക്കേഷൻ നേടി.[4] എൻവയോൺമെന്റൽ മാനേജ്‌മെന്റ് ആൻഡ് പ്ലാനിംഗ് അസോസിയേറ്റ്‌സ് ലിമിറ്റഡ് എന്ന കൺസൾട്ടൻസി അദ്ദേഹം സ്ഥാപിച്ചു.[1] ഷാൻഡ് കരീബിയൻ ഫോറസ്റ്റ് കൺസർവേഷൻ അസോസിയേഷന്റെ ചെയർമാനും ആയി. അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ ഭരണകാലത്ത് സംഘടന സംരക്ഷണ പാർക്കുകൾ സ്ഥാപിക്കാൻ തുടങ്ങി.[13]

ക്വീൻസ് പാർക്ക് സവന്നയ്ക്ക് മുകളിൽ നിർമ്മിക്കാനുള്ള പദ്ധതികൾക്കെതിരെ ഷാൻഡ് പ്രചാരണം നടത്തി. 1999-ലെ ഒരു കുത്തിയിരിപ്പ് സമരത്തിനിടെ, പാർക്കിന്റെ ഒരു ഭാഗത്ത് കല്ലിടാൻ ശ്രമിച്ച ബിൽഡർമാർ ഷാൻഡിൽ ഒരു ട്രക്ക് ചരൽ വലിച്ചെറിഞ്ഞു. ജീവനോടെ കുഴിച്ചെടുത്തെങ്കിലും ശാശ്വതമായ മുറിവുകളുണ്ടായിരുന്നു.[4] പാർക്കിൽ ഒരു സ്റ്റേഡിയം നിർമ്മിക്കാനുള്ള 2006-ലെ ഗവൺമെന്റ് നിർദ്ദേശത്തെ അദ്ദേഹം എതിർത്തു. [14] പാരിസ്ഥിതിക വിലയിരുത്തലുകൾ ഉറപ്പാക്കാതെ നിർമ്മാണ പദ്ധതികൾക്ക് അംഗീകാരം ലഭിച്ച മറ്റ് കേസുകൾ അദ്ദേഹം തുറന്നുകാട്ടി.[15][16]

ട്രിനിഡാഡ് എക്‌സ്‌പ്രസിലും ട്രിനിഡാഡ് ഗാർഡിയനിലും ഷാൻഡ് ലേഖനങ്ങൾ എഴുതി. അവിടെ സംസ്ഥാന പരിസ്ഥിതി മാനേജ്‌മെന്റ് ഏജൻസിയുടെ ഭരണ ഘടനയെ അദ്ദേഹം വിമർശിച്ചു.[17] അദ്ദേഹം ട്രിനിഡാഡ് ആൻഡ് ടൊബാഗോയുടെ എർത്ത് ചാർട്ടർ നാഷണൽ കമ്മിറ്റിയുടെ ചെയർമാനായിരുന്നു.[18]

സ്വകാര്യ ജീവിതം[തിരുത്തുക]

ഷാൻഡിന് അഞ്ച് കുട്ടികളുണ്ടായിരുന്നു.[19] ഒരു അമേരിക്കൻ സാമൂഹ്യ ശാസ്ത്രജ്ഞയായ മേരി ഷോർസുമായുള്ള വിവാഹത്തിൽ നിന്നുള്ളതാണ് അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ രണ്ട് ഇളയ കുട്ടികൾ.[1] ഷാൻഡും ഷോർസും ചേർന്ന് ട്രോപ്പിക്കൽ റീ-ലീഫ് ഫൗണ്ടേഷൻ സ്ഥാപിച്ചു.[20]

മരണം[തിരുത്തുക]

ഷാൻഡ് 2021 ജനുവരി 20-ന് 81-ആം വയസ്സിൽ ദീർഘനാളത്തെ അസുഖത്തെത്തുടർന്ന് മരിച്ചു.[4] ജനുവരി 27 ന്റെ സമ്മേളനത്തിന്റെ തുടക്കത്തിൽ ജനപ്രതിനിധി സഭ ഷാൻഡിന് ആദരാഞ്ജലി അർപ്പിച്ചു.[21]
