സപുഷ്പികളിൽപ്പെടുന്ന ഒരു സസ്യകുടുംബമാണ് സൈപറേസീ (Cyperaceae). ഈ കുടുംബത്തിലെ മിക്ക സസ്യങ്ങളും പുല്ലുവർഗ്ഗത്തിൽ പെടുന്ന സസ്യമാണെന്നു തോന്നിപ്പിക്കുമെങ്കിലും ഇവ പുല്ലുവർഗ്ഗത്തിൽ പെടുന്നവയല്ല. ബഹുവർഷി ചെടികളും ഏകവർഷികളും ഉൾപ്പെടുന്ന ഈ സസ്യകുടുംബം ഒറ്റപ്പരിപ്പു (Monocot)സസ്യങ്ങളിൽപ്പെടുന്നവയാണ്. ഈ സസ്യകുടുംബത്തിൽ ഏകദേശം 113ജീനസ്സുകളിലായി ഏകദേശം 2000ഓളം സ്പീഷിസുകളും ഉൾപ്പെടുന്നു.^[3] ഏഷ്യ, വടക്കേ അമേരിക്ക എന്നിവിടങ്ങളിലെ ഉഷ്ണമേഖലാപ്രദേശങ്ങളിലാണ് ഇവ സാധാരണയായി കാണപ്പെടുന്നത്. എന്നാൽ ഈ കുടുംബത്തിൽപ്പെടുന്ന ചില സ്പീഷിസുകൾ നനവുള്ള പ്രദേശങ്ങളിലും കാണപ്പെടാറുണ്ട്. മുത്തങ്ങ , സൈപ്രസ്‌ , മുട്ടന്ന, കരടിപ്പുല്ല് തുടങ്ങിയവയെല്ലാം ഈ സസ്യകുടുംബത്തിൽ ഉൾപ്പെടുന്നവയാണ്.

സവിശേഷതകൾ[തിരുത്തുക]

ഇവയുടെ തണ്ടുകൾ മൂന്ന് കോണുകളോടു കൂടിയവയും ദൃഢമായതുമാണ്. ഇലകൾ ലഘുപത്രങ്ങളോടു കൂടിയവയും, ഏകാന്തരന്യാസത്തിൽ (alternate phyllotaxis) ക്രമീകരിച്ചതും, സമാന്തര സിരാവിന്യാസത്തോടുകൂടിയവയുമാണ്. വീതികുറഞ്ഞ നീളമുള്ള ഇലകളുടെ മധ്യസിര ഉയർന്നു നിൽക്കുന്നതും വെള്ള നിറത്തിലുള്ളതുമായിരിക്കും. ഇവയുടെ പൂക്കൾ വളരെ ചെറുതും ഏകലിംഗമോ ദ്വിലിംഗ മോ ആയിരിക്കും.
