കണ്ടൽക്കാടുകൾ, ലവണ ജലം നിറഞ്ഞ ചതുപ്പുനിലങ്ങൾ, നദികളുടെ അഴിമുഖങ്ങൾ തുടങ്ങി ലവണ ജലം ഉള്ള പ്രദേശങ്ങളിൽ കാണപ്പെടുന്ന മുതലയാണ് കായൽ മുതല (Saltwater Crocodile).^[2] Crocodylus porosus എന്ന ശാസ്ത്രനാമത്തിൽ അറിയപ്പെടുന്ന ഈ മുതലയാണ് ഇന്ന് ജീവിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നതിൽ ഏറ്റവും വലിയ ഉരഗം ^[3] ആൺ മുതലകൾക്ക് 2,000 കി.ഗ്രാം (4,400 lb) വരെ ഭാരം ഉണ്ടാകുന്നു.
