ഇന്ത്യയിലെ കേന്ദ്ര സർവകലാശാലകൾ അഥവാ യൂണിയൻ സർവ്വകലാശാലകൾ  നിലവിൽ വന്നത് പാർലമെന്റ് പാസാക്കിയ നിയമമനുസരിച്ചാണ്. ഈ സ്ഥാപനങ്ങൾ  മാനവശേഷി വികസന വകുപ്പിൻ കീഴിലുള്ള ഉന്നതവിദ്യാഭ്യാസ വിഭാഗത്തിന്റെ അധികാരപരിധിയിൽ പെടുന്നു. [1]. ഇന്ത്യൻ സർവകലാശാലകൾ പൊതുവെ യൂണിവേഴ്സിറ്റി ഗ്രാൻഡ്സ് കമ്മിഷൻ ആക്റ്റ് 1956 പ്രകാരം രൂപീകരിക്കപ്പെട്ട യൂണിവേഴ്സിറ്റി ഗ്രാൻഡ്സ് കമ്മിഷൻറെ (യു. ജി. സി.) അംഗീകാരത്തോടെയാണ് പ്രവർത്തിച്ചുവരുന്നത്.[2][3]  സർവകലാശാലകളുടെ സാർവത്രികമായ ഏകോപനത്തിനും വിലയിരുത്തലിനുമായി   15 സാങ്കേതിക കൗൺസിലുകളും സ്ഥാപിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്.[4] എന്നാൽ ഇവക്കു പുറമെ Central Universities Act, 2009  കേന്ദ്ര സർവ്വകലാശാലകളുടെ അധികാരപരിധികൾക്കും, ലക്ഷ്യങ്ങൾക്കും, നടത്തിപ്പിനും വേണ്ട മാർഗനിർദ്ദേശങ്ങൾ നല്കുന്നു. [5] 2017 ജൂൺ 29ലെ യു. ജി. സിയുടെ കണക്കുപ്രകാരം, 47 കേന്ദ്ര സർവ്വകലാശാലകൾ ഇന്ത്യയിലൊട്ടാകെ പ്രവർത്തിച്ചുവരുന്നുണ്ട്.  [6]

യു ജി സി നിയന്ത്രിക്കുന്ന മറ്റു തരത്തിലുള്ള സർവ്വകലാശാലകൾ:

  • പ്രാദേശികമായ നിയമസഭകൾ പാസ്സാക്കിയ നിയമപ്രകാരം സ്ഥാപിച്ചതും സംസ്ഥാനങ്ങളിലും മറ്റു പ്രദേശങ്ങളിലും പ്രവർത്തിക്കുന്നതുമായ സർവ്വകലാശാലകളാണ് സംസ്ഥാനത്തിനു കീഴിലുള്ള സർവ്വകാലാശലകൾ.[7][8]
  • Section 3 of UGC Act, 1956 പ്രകാരം യു ജി സിയുടെ ഉപദേശപ്രകാരം ഉന്നതവിദ്യാഭ്യാസ വകുപ്പ് ചില സ്ഥാപനങ്ങൾക്ക് സർവ്വകലാശാകൾക്കുതുല്യമായ ഉന്നത പദവി നൽകി. ഇത്തരം സ്ഥാപനങ്ങലെ ഡീംഡ് സർവ്വകലാശാലകൾ എന്നു പറയുന്നു.[9][10]
  • യു ജി സി അംഗീകാരം ലഭിച്ച ചില സ്വകാര്യ സർവ്വകലാശാലകളും നിലവിലുണ്ട്. അവയ്ക്ക് ഡിഗ്രികൾ നൽകാനുള്ള അനുവാദം നൽകിയിട്ടുണ്ടെങ്കിലും അവയ്ക്ക് കാമ്പസിനുപുറത്തുള്ള കോളജുകൾ സ്ഥാപിക്കാനുള്ള അനുമതിയില്ല.[11][12]

മുകളിൽ പറഞ്ഞപ്രകാരമുള്ള സർവ്വകലാശാലകൾക്കുപുറമേ. മറ്റു ചില സ്ഥാപനങ്ങൾക്കും ബിരുദങ്ങൾ നൽകാനുള്ള അനുവാദം നൽകിയിട്ടുണ്ട്. ഇത്തരം സ്ഥാപനങ്ങൽക്കും കോളജുകളെ അഫിലിയേറ്റു ചെയുവാനുള്ള അനുവാദമില്ല. അതുപോലെ അവയ്ക്ക് ഔദ്യോഗികമായി സർവ്വകലാശാലകൾ എന്നു വിളിക്കപ്പെടുവാനൊ അർഹതയുണ്ടാവില്ല. പക്ഷെ, അവയെ സ്വാശ്രയസ്ഥാപനങ്ങൽ എന്നൊ സ്വാശ്രയ സംഘടനയെന്നോ വിളിക്കാവുന്നതാണ്. ഉന്നതവിദ്യാഭ്യാസവകുപ്പിന്റെ കീഴിലാണിവ പ്രവർത്തിക്കുക.[13] Indian Institutes of Technology, the National Institutes of Technology, the Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research, the Indian Institutes of Engineering Science and Technology, the Indian Institutes of Management (though these award diplomas, not degrees),[14] the National Law Schools, the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, തുടങ്ങിയവയാണിത്തരം സ്ഥാപനങ്ങൾക്കുദാഹരണം
