സൗത്ത് ആഫ്രിക്കയിലെ മൂയി നദിയ്ക്കരികിൽ ഡച്ച് വംശത്തിലെ ആഫ്രിക്കനെർ ഫാമിലിയിൽപ്പെട്ട വില്യം സ്വേൻപോൾ, എയിലിൻ സ്വേൻപോൾ എന്നിവരുടെ പുത്രിയായി ജനിച്ചു. സിംബാവേയിലെ മുടേർ ആയിരുന്നു അവരുടെ പിതാവിന്റെ സ്വദേശം. ഈ പ്രദേശം മുൻകാലത്ത് ഉംടലി എന്നാണറിയപ്പെട്ടിരുന്നത്.[16]എന്ന സ്വേൻപോളിന്റെ അമ്മ സൗത്ത് ആഫ്രിക്കക്കാരിയും അവർക്ക് സ്റ്റീഫൻ എന്ന മൂത്തസഹോദരനുമുണ്ട്.
