പതിനേഴാം നൂറ്റാണ്ടിൽ ന്യൂ നെതർലാൻഡ് കോളനിയായ പാവോണിയയുടെ ഭാഗമായാണ് ഹോബോകെൻ ആദ്യ സ്ഥിരതാമസ കേന്ദ്രമായത്. പത്തൊൻപതാം നൂറ്റാണ്ടിന്റെ തുടക്കത്തിൽ കേണൽ ജോൺ സ്റ്റീവൻസാണ് ആദ്യം ഒരു റിസോർട്ടായും പിന്നീട് താമസസ്ഥലമായും നഗരം വികസിപ്പിച്ചത്. യഥാർത്ഥത്തിൽ ബെർഗൻ ടൗൺഷിപ്പിന്റെയും പിന്നീട് നോർത്ത് ബെർഗൻ ടൗൺഷിപ്പിന്റെയും ഭാഗമായിരുന്ന ഇത് 1849 -ൽ ഒരു പ്രത്യേക ടൗൺഷിപ്പായി മാറുകയും 1855 -ൽ ഒരു നഗരമായി സംയോജിപ്പിക്കപ്പെടുകയും ചെയ്തു. അമേരിക്കൻ ഐക്യനാടുകളഇലെ ഏറ്റവും പഴയ സാങ്കേതിക സർവകലാശാലകളിലൊന്നായ  സ്റ്റീവൻസ് ഇൻസ്റ്റിറ്റ്യൂട്ട് ഓഫ് ടെക്നോളജിയുടെ ആസ്ഥാനമാണ് ഹോബോക്കൺ. ഫ്രാങ്ക് സിനാട്രയുടെ ജന്മസ്ഥലവും സ്വദേശവുമായി അറിയപ്പെടുന്ന ഈ നഗരത്തിലെ വിവിധ തെരുവുകൾക്കും പാർക്കുകൾക്കും അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ പേര് നൽകിയിട്ടുണ്ട്.
