സുരിനാം രാജ്യവുമായി തിരിച്ചറിയപ്പെട്ട ആളുകളാണ് സുരിനാമിസ് ജനങ്ങൾ. ഈ സമ്പർക്കം വാസയോഗ്യമായതോ നിയമപരമോ ചരിത്രപരമോ സാംസ്കാരികമോ ആകാം. സുരിനാമിസ് പൗരന്മാരെന്നറിയപ്പെടുന്നവരിൽ (Surinamese people) കൂടുതലും അവരുടെ മുൻഗാമികൾ വിദേശപൗരാവകാശമുള്ളവരായിരുന്നു. സുരിനാം വിവിധ വംശീയ, ദേശീയ പശ്ചാത്തലങ്ങളിൽ ഉള്ളവർ താമസിക്കുന്ന ഒരു വംശീയ രാഷ്ട്രമാണ്. ഇതിന്റെ ഫലമായി അവരുടെ വംശീയതയ്ക്കനുസരിച്ച് ദേശീയതയെ തുല്യതപ്പെടുത്തുകയോ ചെയ്തിട്ടില്ല. എന്നാൽ വിവിധ മതങ്ങളാൽ സുരിനാമിസ് രാഷ്ട്രം നിർമ്മിതമാണ്.
