ദക്ഷിണ ശാന്ത സമുദ്രത്തിലെ സമോവൻ ദ്വീപുകളുടെ പടിഞ്ഞാറൻ ഭാഗം ഭരിക്കുന്ന രാജ്യമാണ് സമോവ. ഇന്റിപെന്റന്റ് സ്റ്റേറ്റ് ഓഫ് സമോവ എന്നാണ് ഔദ്യോഗിക നാമം. 1976 ഡിസംബർ 15-ന് ഐക്യരാഷ്ട്രസഭയിൽ അംഗമായി. കപ്പലോട്ടത്തിൽ വിദഗ്ദ്ധന്മാർ ധാരളമുള്ള ഈ ദ്വീപ സമൂഹത്തെ (അമേരിക്കൻ സമോവയും ഉൾപ്പെടെ) 20-ആം നൂറ്റാണ്ടിനു മുമ്പ്, നാവികരുടെ ദ്വീപുകൾ (Navigators Island) എന്നാണ് വിശേഷിപ്പിച്ചിരുന്നത്.
