ജീവിതരേഖ

ഹാനിബാൾ ബെക്കറിന്റെയും തുരിംഗിയയിലെ ഓർഡ്രൂഫിൽ നിന്ന് കുടിയേറിയ പിതാവ് ഏണസ്റ്റ് ബെക്കറുടേയും മൂത്തമകളായി ലിഡിയ മാഞ്ചസ്റ്ററിലെ കൂപ്പർ സ്ട്രീറ്റിൽ ജനിച്ചു. അക്കാലത്തെ പല പെൺകുട്ടികളെയും പോലെ ബെക്കറും വീട്ടിൽ തന്നെ വിദ്യാഭ്യാസം നേടിയിരുന്നു. ബുദ്ധിപരമായി ജിജ്ഞാസയുള്ള അവൾ 1850 മുതൽ സസ്യശാസ്ത്രവും ജ്യോതിശാസ്ത്രവും പഠിച്ചു, ഹോർട്ടികൾച്ചർ സംബന്ധിച്ച 1862 ലെ ഒരു പണ്ഡിത പ്രബന്ധത്തിന് സ്വർണ്ണ മെഡൽ നേടി. മാതാപിതാക്കളേക്കാൾ ഒരു അമ്മാവൻ ഈ താൽപ്പര്യത്തെ പ്രോത്സാഹിപ്പിച്ചു. അഞ്ച് വർഷത്തിന് ശേഷം അവർ മാഞ്ചസ്റ്ററിൽ ലേഡീസ് ലിറ്റററി സൊസൈറ്റി സ്ഥാപിച്ചു.
