2005ൽ ലാവോസിലെ സാക്ഷരതാനിരക്ക് 73% (83% പുരുഷന്മാരും 63% സ്ത്രീകളും സാക്ഷരരാണ്) ആണ്.^[1]

ലാവോസിലെ അനേകം വംശങ്ങളിൽ ലാവോ ലാവും വംശത്തിലുള്ളവർക്കേ മുമ്പുതൊട്ടേ പരമ്പരാഗതമായ ഔപചാരിക വിദ്യാഭ്യാസം ലഭിച്ചിരുന്നുള്ളു. മറ്റു വംശങ്ങൾക്കു അവരുടെ ഭാഷകൾക്കു സ്വന്തമായ ലിപിപോലും ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നില്ല. ഇരുപതാം നൂറ്റാണ്ടിന്റെ മദ്ധ്യഭാഗം വരെ, വിദ്യാഭ്യാസമെന്നാൽ ബുദ്ധമത ക്ഷേത്രങ്ങളോടനുബന്ധിച്ചുള്ള പാഠശാലകളിൽ ബുദ്ധ സന്യാസിമാർ ബുദ്ധഭിക്ഷുക്കളേയും കുട്ടികളേയും പഠിപ്പിക്കുന്ന മതവും ഭാഷയും പാലി, ലാവോ ഭാഷ, അടിസ്ഥാനപരമായ ഗണിതം തുടങ്ങിയവ മാത്രമായിരുന്നു. വാട്ട് എന്നാണിവ അറിയപ്പെട്ടത്. അനേകം ഗ്രാമങ്ങളിൽ ബുദ്ധസന്യാസിമാരാകാനായുള്ള കുട്ടികൾക്കായി ഇവ നടത്തിയിരുന്നു. മറ്റുള്ളവരേയും ഇവിടെ പഠിപ്പിച്ചു. എന്നാൽ, നഗര പ്രദേശത്തെ ബുദ്ധമത മൊണാസ്ട്രികളിൽ സമ്പന്ന വിദ്യാർത്ഥികൾക്ക് ഉന്നതവിദ്യാഭ്യാസം പ്രാപ്തമായിരുന്നു.^[2]
