രണ്ടര കോടിയോളം ആളുകൾ മാതൃഭാഷയായി സംസാരിക്കുന്ന ഒരു റോമാൻസ് ഭാഷയാണ് റൊമാനിയൻ ഭാഷ (Romanian , limba română [ˈlimba roˈmɨnə] românește)[4][5]. റൊമാനിയ , മൊൾഡോവ എന്നിവിടങ്ങളിലെ ഔദ്യോഗിക ഭാഷയാണ് റൊമാനിയൻ. നാൽപ്പത് ലക്ഷത്തോളം ആളുകൾ രണ്ടാമത്തെ ഭാഷയായും റൊമാനിയൻ സംസാരിക്കുന്നു.[6][7] യൂറോപ്പിയൻ യൂണിയന്റെ ഔദ്യോഗിക ഭാഷകളിൽ ഒന്നാണിത്.

ബാൾക്കൻ റൊമാൻസ് ഭാഷകളിൽപ്പെടുന്ന പടിഞ്ഞാറൻ റൊമാൻസ് ഭാഷകളിൽനിന്നും 5-8നൂറ്റാണ്ടുകളിലാണ് ഈ ഭാഷ ഉരുത്തിരിഞ്ഞത്.[8] മൊൾഡോവയിൽ സോവിയറ്റ് ഭരണകാലത്ത് മൊൾഡോവൻ എന്നാണ് അറിയപ്പെട്ടിരുന്നത്.[nb 1] ഈ ഭാഷ സംസാരിക്കുന്നവർ ഓസ്റ്റ്രേലിയ, ഇറ്റലി, സ്പെയിൻ, ഉക്രെയ്ൻ, ബൾഗേറിയ, യു.എസ്, കാനഡ, ബ്രസീൽ, മെക്സിക്കോ, അർജന്റീന, ഗ്രീസ്, ടർകി, റഷ്യ, പോർത്തുഗൽ, യു.കെ, സൈപ്രസ്, ഇസ്രയേൽ, ഫ്രാൻസ് ജർമനി എന്നിവിടങ്ങളിലേക്ക് കുടിയേറി താമസിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്.

ക്രിസ്തുവിനുശേഷമാണ് കിഴക്കൻ റോമാൻസ് വൾഗർ ലത്തിനിൽനിന്നും ഉരുത്തിരിഞ്ഞത്.[9][10]

  1. The constitution of the Republic of Moldova refers to the country's language as Moldovan, whilst the 1991 Declaration of Independence names the official language Romanian. In December 2013, a decision of the Constitutional Court of Moldova ruled that the Declaration of Independence takes precedence over the Constitution and that the state language is therefore Romanian, not "Moldovan". "Moldovan court rules official language is 'Romanian,' replacing Soviet-flavored 'Moldovan'"
