ആധുനിക കാലത്തെ പ്രധാന വിപ്ലവമാണ് 1688 ഇൽ ഇംഗ്ലണ്ടിൽ നടന്ന മഹത്തായ വിപ്ലവം. രക്തരഹിത വിപ്ലവം എന്നും മഹത്തായ വിപ്ലവം അറിയപ്പെടുന്നു. രാജാവിൻറെ ഏകാധിപത്യ ഭരണം അവസാനിപ്പിച്ച് പാർലമെന്റിൻറെ അധികാരങ്ങൾ വർദ്ധിപ്പിക്കാൻ രക്ത രഹിത വിപ്ലവത്തിനായി. മഹത്തായ വിപ്ലവം നടക്കുമ്പോൾ ഇംഗ്ലണ്ടിലെ രാജാവ് ജെയിംസ്‌ 2 -)മൻ ആയിരുന്നു. ചാൾസ് ഒന്നാമനെ രാജ്യദ്രോഹകുറ്റം ചുമത്തി വധിച്ച ശേക്ഷം, ഒലിവർ ക്രോംവെൽ അധികാരത്തിൽ വന്നു. ഒലിവർ ക്രോംവെൽന്റെ ഭരണകാലഘട്ടമാണ് കോമൺവെൽത് കാലഘട്ടം എന്ന് അറിയപ്പെടുന്നത്.
