മേരി ഡി സൂസ

മേരി മത്തിൽഡ ഡി സൂസ (1890-1953) ഒരു ഇന്ത്യൻ-കെനിയൻ ഡോക്ടറായിരുന്നു. 1919 മുതൽ പ്രാക്ടീസ് ചെയ്തിരുന്ന അവർ കെനിയയിലെ ആദ്യത്തെ ഏഷ്യൻ വനിതാ ഡോക്ടറായിരുന്നു ^[1] .

ജീവിതം[തിരുത്തുക]

പീറ്റർ പോൾ പെരേരയുടെ പതിനാല് മക്കളിൽ ഒരാളായ മേരി മത്തിൽഡ പെരേര ബോംബെയിലെ മാസഗോണിലാണ് വളർന്നത്. 1914-ൽ ഗ്രാന്റ് മെഡിക്കൽ കോളേജിൽ നിന്ന് മെഡിസിൻ ആന്റ് സർജറിയിൽ ലൈസൻസ് നേടി . ഭാവ്‌നഗർ ജില്ലയിലും ഛോട്ടാ ഉദയ്പൂർ ജില്ലയിലും മെഡിക്കൽ ഓഫീസറായി ജോലി ചെയ്തിരുന്ന അവർ ബോംബെയിലേക്ക് മടങ്ങുന്നതിന് മുമ്പ് കെരാവാല മെറ്റേണിറ്റി ഹോസ്പിറ്റലിൽ ജോലി ചെയ്തു. 1919-ൽ ഇന്ത്യൻ നാഷണൽ കോൺഗ്രസിന്റെ ലാഹോർ സമ്മേളനത്തിൽ പങ്കെടുത്തു. ^[2]

1919-ൽ ഡോ. അലക്‌സ് കെയ്‌റ്റാനോ ലാക്‌റ്റാൻസിയോ ഡി സൂസയെ വിവാഹം കഴിച്ചതിനുശേഷം അവൾ അദ്ദേഹത്തോടൊപ്പം നെയ്‌റോബിയിലേക്ക് മാറി. അവിടെ അവൾ ഡോക്ടറായും മിഡ്‌വൈഫായും ജോലി ചെയ്തു. ^[3] 1926-ൽ ലേഡി ഗ്രിഗ് വെൽഫെയർ ലീഗ് രൂപീകരിച്ചതിനുശേഷം, ഇന്ത്യൻ സ്ത്രീകൾക്കായി ലേഡി ഗ്രിഗ് ഇന്ത്യൻ മെറ്റേണിറ്റി ഹോം എന്ന മെറ്റേണിറ്റി ഹോസ്പിറ്റൽ നിർമ്മിക്കുന്നതിനായി ഡി സൂസ വിജയകരമായി ധനസമാഹരണം നടത്തി. ^[4] ആശുപത്രിയുടെ ഭരണഘടന കമ്മിറ്റിയിൽ ഇന്ത്യക്കാർക്കും യൂറോപ്യന്മാർക്കും സമതുലിതമായ പ്രാതിനിധ്യം നൽകാത്തതിനാൽ പ്രതിഷേധിച്ച് അവരും ഭർത്താവും ഗവർണർമാരുടെ ബോർഡിൽ ഇടം വേണ്ട എന്ന് പറഞ്ഞ് ഒഴിഞ്ഞു. ഇന്ത്യൻ എജ്യുക്കേഷൻ ബോർഡ്, ഗേൾ ഗൈഡ്സ്, ബോയ് സ്കൗട്ട്സ് എന്നിവയിലും അവർ പങ്കാളിയായിരുന്നു.

കിഴക്കൻ ആഫ്രിക്കൻ ഇന്ത്യൻ നാഷണൽ കോൺഗ്രസിനെ രണ്ടുതവണ നയിച്ച സരോജിനി നായിഡുവിനെപ്പോലുള്ള പ്രധാനപ്പെട്ട ഇന്ത്യൻ സന്ദർശകർക്ക് മേരി ഡി സൂസ തന്റെ വീട്ടിൽ ആതിഥ്യം വഹിച്ചു. 1940-കളുടെ മധ്യത്തിൽ അവൾ രോഗബാധിതയായി, അവളുടെ ജീവിതത്തിന്റെ അവസാന ദശകത്തിൽ കൂടുതലും വീട്ടിൽ ഒതുങ്ങി. ^[5]

മേരി പെരേര 1919-ൽ ഒരു സഹ മെഡിക്കൽ ഡോക്ടറായ അലക്സിയോ കെയ്റ്റാനോ ലാക്റ്റാൻസിയോ ഡി സൂസയെ വിവാഹം കഴിച്ചു. 1953-ൽ 63-ാം വയസ്സിൽ നെയ്‌റോബിയിൽ വച്ച് അവർ അന്തരിച്ചു. അവർക്ക് തിയോ, പീറ്റർ, ഓറ എന്നീ മൂന്ന് കുട്ടികളുണ്ടായിരുന്നു. അവരുടെ മകൻ പീറ്റർ എ ഡി സൂസ മാതാപിതാക്കളെപ്പോലെ ഒരു ഡോക്ടറായി. ^[6]
