മഹാഗണിയുടെ കുടുംബമായ, മീലിയേസീയിലെ[3] ഒരു ജനുസാണ് മീലിയ (Melia). ഗ്രീക്കുനാമമായ μηλια -യിൽ നിന്നും തിയോഫ്രാസ്റ്റസ് (c. 371 – c. 287 BC) ഈ നാമം ഉപയോഗിച്ചുതുടങ്ങിയത്. മീലിയയിലെ ഇലകളോടു സദൃശ്യമുള്ള Fraxinus ornus നാണ് അദ്ദേഹം ഈ പേരു നൽകിയത്.[4]
