മാത്യൂ റോബർട്ട് സ്മിത്ത് Matthew Robert Smith (born 28 October 1982) ഇംഗ്ലിഷ് സിനിമാ അഭിനേതാവ് ആണ്. ബി. ബി. സി.യിൽ ഡോക്ടർ ഹൂ എന്ന പരമ്പരയിലെ പതിനൊന്നാം പുനർജന്മമായി അഭിനയിച്ചത് വലിയ പ്രശസ്തി നൽകി. സ്മിത്ത് ആദ്യം ഒരു പ്രൊഫഷണൽ ഫുട്ബാൾ കളിക്കാരനാകാനായാണ് ആഗ്രഹിച്ചത്. പക്ഷെ, സ്പോണ്ടിലോലിസിസ് എന്ന രോഗം അദ്ദേഹത്തെ കായികസംഗത്തുനിന്നും മാറ്റിനിർത്തി.[1] നാഷണൽ യൂത്ത് തിയേറ്ററിൽ ചേർന്ന് യൂണിവേഴ്സിറ്റി ഓഫ് ഈസ്റ്റ് ആംഗ്ലിയയിൽ നാടകകലയും എഴുത്തും അഭ്യസിക്കുകയുമുണ്ടായി. അങ്ങനെ 2003ൽ അദ്ദേഹം ഒരു നടനായി മാറി. Murder in the Cathedral, Fresh Kills, The History Boys, and On the Shore of the Wide World തുടങ്ങിയ നാടകങ്ങളിൽ ലണ്ടൻ തിയേറ്ററുകളിൽ അഭിനയിച്ചു. വെസ്റ്റെൻഡ് തിയെറ്ററുകളിലൂടെ തന്റെ നടനകലാവൈഭവം പ്രദർശിപ്പിക്കുന്നതു തുടർന്നു. അദ്ദേഹം Swimming with Sharks എന്ന അമേരിക്കൻ കോമഡി നാടകം ക്രിസ്ത്യൻ സ്ലേറ്ററുമായിച്ചേർന്ന് ,[2] സ്റ്റേജിനായി രൂപാന്തരപ്പെടുത്തി അവതരിപ്പിച്ചു. ഒരു വർഷത്തിനു ശേഷം വിമർശകരുടെ ആഴത്തിലുള്ള നിരൂപണങ്ങൾക്കു വിധേയമായ സർവ്വസ്വീകാര്യമായ That Face എന്ന നാടകരൂപത്തിൽ ഹെൻറി ആയി അദ്ദേഹം അഭിനയിച്ചു. ബി ബി സിയിൽ വന്ന ഫിലിപ്പ് പുൾമാന്റെ റൂബി ഇൻ ദ സ്മോക്ക്, ഷാഡോ ഇൻ ദ നോർത്ത് എന്നിവയുടെ പുനരാവിഷ്കാരത്തിൽ ജിം ടെയ്ലർ ആയി അദ്ദേഹം അഭിനയിച്ചു. 2007ലെ ബി ബി സി സീരീസ് ആയ പാർട്ടി ആനിമൽസ് ആയിരുന്നു സ്മിത്തിന്റെ ടെലിവിഷനിൽ ലഭിച്ച ആദ്യ പ്രധാന റോൾ. ഇതിൽ ഡാന്നി ആയി അദ്ദേഹം അഭിനയിച്ചു. 2009ൽ എലവന്ത് ഇങ്കാർനേഷൻ ഓഫ് ദ ഡോക്ടറിൽ അദ്ദേഹം അഭിനയിക്കുമ്പോൾ ഒരു ബ്രിട്ടിഷ് ടെലിവിഷൻ സീരീസിൽ അഭിനയിച്ച ആദ്യത്തെ ഏറ്റവും പ്രായം കുറഞ്ഞ അഭിനേതാവ് ആയി അദ്ദേഹം മാറി.[4] 2013 ക്രിസ്തുമസ് ഡേ സ്പെഷ്യൽ ആയ "The Time of the Doctor" അഭിനയിച്ച് ആ സീരിയലിൽ നിന്നും അദ്ദേഹം പിന്മാറുകയുണ്ടായി.[5] He portrayed the physical embodiment of Terminator Genisys ലെ Skynetലെ ഭൗതിക സ്വത്വം ആയി അദ്ദേഹം മാറി(2015).[6][7] 2016 മുതൽ 2017 വരെ, അദ്ദേഹം പീറ്റർ മോർഗാന്റെ നെറ്റ്ഫ്ലിക്സ് എന്ന ജീവചരിത്രനാടകപരമ്പരയായ ദ ക്രൗണിൽ Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh ആയി അഭിനയിച്ചു.[8]

മാത്യു റോബർട്ട് സ്മിത്ത് 1982 ഒക്ടോബർ 28നു നോർത്താംപ്റ്റൺഷയറിലെ നോർത്താംപ്റ്റണിൽ ജനിച്ചു. [9] അദ്ദേഹം ഡേവിഡ് സ്മിത്തിന്റെയും ലിൻ സ്മിത്തിന്റെയും മകനായിരുന്നു. [10] Eric Prydz's song "Call on Me" (2004)എന്ന മ്യൂസിക് വീഡിയോയിലെ അഭിനേതാവായിരുന്നു അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ സഹൊദരിയായ ലൗറ ജെയിൻ.[11]
സ്മിത്ത് നോർതാംപ്റ്റൺ സ്കൂൾ ഫോർ ബോയിസിലാണു ചേർന്നത്. അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ പിതാമഹൻ ഒരു പ്രഫഷണൽ ഫുട്ബാൾ കളിക്കാരനായിരുന്നു. നോട്സ് കൗണ്ടി ഫുട്ബാൾ ക്ലബ്ബിൽ ചേർന്ന് അദ്ദേഹം കളിച്ചു. സ്മിത്തിനും ഇതുപോലെ ഒരു ഫുട്ബാൾ കളിക്കാരനാകാനായിരുന്നു ആഗ്രഹം. എന്നാൽ, ഒരു ഗുരുതരമായ പുറത്തുണ്ടായ പരിക്കുമൂലം സ്പോണ്ടിലോസിസ് അവസ്ഥയിലെത്തുകയും അതുമൂലം തന്റെ ഫുട്ബാൾ സ്വപ്നം അവസാനിച്ചു ഫുട്ബാളിൽനിന്നും പിന്മാറുകയും ചെയ്യേണ്ടിവന്നു. അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ നാടകാദ്ധ്യാപകൻ അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ അനുവാദമില്ലാതെതന്നെ നാടകസംരംഭത്തിൽ അദ്ദേഹത്തിനുവേണ്ടി കരാറിലേർപ്പെട്ട് ഒപ്പുവയ്ക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു. ആദ്യത്തെ രണ്ടു സന്ദർഭങ്ങളിലും അദ്ദേഹം പങ്കെടുക്കാൻ കഴിയാതിരുന്നതിനാൽ അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ നാടകാദ്ധ്യാപകൻ, Twelve Angry Men എന്ന നാടകത്തിലെ ജൂറർ ആയി അഭിനയിക്കാന്വേണ്ട ക്രമീകരണങ്ങൾ ഏർപ്പെടുത്തിക്കൊടുത്തു. ഈ നാടകത്തിൽ അദ്ധ്യാപകന്റെ നിർബന്ധത്തിനു വഴങ്ങി അദ്ദേഹം അഭിനയിച്ചെങ്കിലും തുടർന്നുവന്ന ഒരു നാടക ഫെസ്റ്റിവലിൽ അദ്ധ്യാപകൻ കരാർ ഒപ്പിട്ടെങ്കിലും അഭിനയിക്കാൻ കൂട്ടാക്കിയില്ല. അദ്ദേഹം സ്വയം ഒരു ഫുട്ബാൾ കളിക്കാരനാകാനാണ് ആഗ്രഹിച്ചത്. സാമൂഹ്യമായി സ്വീകാര്യനായ ഒരു നാടകകാരൻ എന്ന നിലയിൽ അറിയപ്പെടാൻ അദ്ദേഹം ആഗ്രഹിച്ചില്ല. എങ്കിലും അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ നാടകാദ്ധ്യാപകൻ അദ്ദേഹത്തെ സ്ഥിരമായി ലണ്ടനിലെ നാഷണൽ യൂത്ത് തിയേറ്ററിൽ ചേരാനായി നിർബന്ധിച്ചുകൊണ്ടിരുന്നു.
സ്കൂൾ വിട്ടശേഷം സ്മിത്ത് യൂണിവേഴ്സിറ്റി ഓഫ് ഈസ്റ്റ് ആൻഗ്ലിയയിൽനിന്നും നാടകവും എഴുത്തും പരിശീലിച്ചു. 2005ൽ ഗ്രാജ്വേഷൻ പാസായി.[13] അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ നാഷണൽ യൂത്ത് തിയേറ്ററുമായി ബന്ധപ്പെട്ട ആദ്യ തിയേറ്റർ അനുഭവം മർഡർ ഇൻ ദ കത്തീഡ്രലിലെ തോമസ് ബെക്കെറ്റ്, ദ മാസ്റ്റർ ആൻഡ് മാർഗരീത്തയിലെ മസൂൺ എന്നിവ ആണ്. ഇതിൽ രണ്ടാമത്തെ റോൾ അഭിനയിച്ചപ്പോൾ അദ്ദേഹത്തിനു ഒരു ഏജന്റിനെ ലഭിച്ചു. ഇതുവഴി ആദ്യ പ്രൊഫണൽ ജോലി ഈ രംഗത്ത് ലഭിച്ചു. ഈ ജോലി കാരണം യൂണിവേഴ്സിറ്റിയുമായി അദ്ദേഹത്തിന് ഒരു എഗ്രീമെന്റ് ഉണ്ടാക്കാനായി. അത് അവസാനവർഷത്തിൽ യൂണിവേഴ്സിറ്റിയിൽ ഹാജരാകാതെതന്നെ അദ്ദേഹത്തിനു തന്റെ ഗ്രാജ്വേറ്റ് പഠനം തുടരാനാകുമെന്നായിരുന്നു.[14]
