കുക്കുർബിറ്റേസി കുടുംബത്തിൽപ്പെടുന്ന നിലത്ത് പടർന്ന് വളരുന്ന വടക്കേ അമേരിക്കൻ സ്വദേശിയായ ഒരു സസ്യമാണ് മാറാ (the manroots, wild cucumbers, or cucumber gourds) സാധാരണ Old man in the ground എന്നു വിളിക്കപ്പെടുന്ന ഈ സസ്യം ബൈബിളിലെ പുറപ്പാടു പുസ്തകത്തിൽ 15: 22-25 -ൽ മാറായെ Exodus 15:22-25 കയ്പുള്ള ജലം എന്നു വിശേഷിപ്പിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു. ഇതിനെ അടിസ്ഥാനമാക്കി ജീനസ് മാറാ എന്നു പേർ നല്കിയിരിക്കുന്നു. (ഇതിന് അങ്ങേയറ്റത്തെ കയ്പ്പ് സ്വഭാവമുള്ളതായി സസ്യശാസ്ത്രജ്ഞനായ ആൽബർട്ട് കെലോഗ് കുറിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു).[1]
