മകസ്സാർ കേർണൽസ്[3] എന്നുമറിയപ്പെടുന്ന ബ്രൂസിയ ജാവനിക്ക സിമരൂബേസീ സസ്യകുടുംബത്തിലെ ഒരു കുറ്റിച്ചെടിയാണ്. ഇതിൻറെ ചുരുക്കെഴുത്തായ ജാവനിക എന്ന ലാറ്റിൻ വാക്കിൻറെ അർത്ഥം "ജാവ" എന്നാണ്.[4]ജാവ ബ്രൂസിയ, കോസം എന്നിവ ഇംഗ്ലീഷിലുള്ള സാധാരണ പേരുകൾ ആണ്.[5]

5 മീറ്റർ (20 അടി) ഉയരമുള്ള ഒരു കുറ്റിച്ചെടി അല്ലെങ്കിൽ ചെറുമരമായും ബ്രൂസിയ ജാവനിക്ക വളരുന്നു. ചെറിയ പൂക്കൾ (വ്യാസം 1.5 മുതൽ 2 മില്ലീമീറ്റർ വരെ) പൂക്കുലകളായി പച്ചകലർന്ന വെളുത്ത നിറം മുതൽ പച്ചകലർന്ന ചുവന്ന അല്ലെങ്കിൽ പർപ്പിൾ നിറം വരെ കാണപ്പെടുന്നു.[6]
