ഫാബേസീ സസ്യകുടുംബത്തിലെ സിസാൽപിനോയ്‌ഡേ ഉപവിഭാഗത്തിലെ ഒരു ജീനസ്സാണ് ബൌഹിനിയ (Bauhinia). മന്ദാരം എന്നാണ് ഈ ജനുസ്സിലെ സസ്യയങ്ങൾ കേരളത്തിൽ അറിയപ്പെടുന്നത്. ഏകദേശം 500 ഓളം സ്പീഷിസുകളുള്ള ഈ ജീനസ്സിലെ സസ്യങ്ങൾ ഇന്ത്യ, കാലിഫോർണിയ, അമേരിക്കൻ ഐക്യനാടുകൾ, ചൈന, ശ്രീലങ്ക, വിയറ്റ്നാം എന്നീ പ്രദേശങ്ങളിൽ സാധാരണയായി കാണപ്പെടുന്നു. സ്വിറ്റ്സർലാന്റ്-ഫ്രഞ്ച് ബൊട്ടാണിസ്റ്റുകളായ ബൌഹിൻ സഹോദരങ്ങളുടെ സ്മരണാർത്ഥമാണ് ഈ സസ്യ ജനുസ്സിന് പേരു കിട്ടിയത്. മഞ്ഞമന്ദാരം, ചുവന്നമന്ദാരം, നാഗവള്ളി, വെള്ളമന്ദാരം, മലയത്തി, കോവിദാരം, ആരംപുളി, എന്നീ സസ്യങ്ങൾ ഈ സസ്യജനുസ്സിലെ അംഗങ്ങളാണ്.

സവിശേഷതകൾ[തിരുത്തുക]

ഈ ജനുസ്സിൽ ഉൾപ്പെടുന്ന സസ്യങ്ങൾ സാധാരണയായി 6-12 മീറ്റർ വരെ ഉയരത്തിൽ വളരുകയും അവയുടെ ശാഖകൾ 3-6 മീറ്റർ വരെ വളരുകയും വ്യാപിക്കുകയും ചെയ്യും. ഇവയുടെ ഇലകൾ രണ്ട് ഇതളുകളോടുകൂടിയവയും 10-15 സെ. മീ. വരെ വിസ്തീർണ്ണമുള്ളവയുമാണ്. പൂക്കൾക്ക് അഞ്ച് ദളങ്ങളാണുള്ളത്, ദളങ്ങളുടെ നിറം സ്പീഷിസുകളനുസരിച്ച് വ്യത്യാസപ്പെട്ടിരിക്കുന്നു. ചില സ്പീഷിസുകളിൽ സുഗന്ധമുള്ള പൂക്കളാണുള്ളത്. ശിശിരകാലത്തിന്റെ അവസാനത്തിൽ പുഷ്പിക്കാൻ തുടങ്ങുന്ന ഇവ ഗ്രീഷ്‌മകാലം തുടങ്ങുന്നതുവരെ പുഷ്പിക്കാറുണ്ട്.
