When used with the "Redirect category shell" (Rcat shell) template:

Template {{Redirect category shell}} may be used to add one or more rcat templates, along with their parameters and categories, to a redirect. For more information see the documentation page below.

When used by itself:

• Used for convenience: This is a redirect from a title that is intended to make it easier to get to the target page; the target is a more appropriate page for the purpose of the redirected title. This rcat is reserved for redirects that target talk pages to centralize discussion and redirects that may not fit other descriptions.
  • For example, this may be a redirect from a title that is used colloquially; however, it is not currently an officially accepted term, though it may have been in the past. It leads to the title in accordance with the naming conventions for common names and can help writing and searches. This redirect does not need to be replaced with a piped link.

Usage

Use this rcat template in any namespace.

• This redirect category (rcat) template populates Category:Redirects for convenience. Add this rcat to a redirect page in the following manner:

#REDIRECT [[Target page name]] {{R for convenience}}

This is in accord with instructions found at WP:REDCAT.

• Template {{This is a redirect}} may also be used to add this and up to seven appropriate rcats to a redirect.
• Use this Rcat on redirects that that are only intended to make it easier to get to the targeted page; the target is a more appropriate page for the purpose of the redirected page. For example, this may be a redirect from a title that is another name, a pseudonym, a nickname, or a synonym as is used colloquially, but is not currently an officially accepted term, though it may have been at one time. This redirect leads to the title in accordance with naming conventions for common names and can help with searches and writing.
• At some point in the future, Jimmy Wales wants to make a printed version of the full Wikipedia encyclopedia. Some rcats will automatically place a redirect in either Category:Printworthy redirects or Category:Unprintworthy redirects. Other rcats (like this one, for example) do not, which means that it is up to editors to choose which of those categories, Printworthy or Unprintworthy, is appropriate and should be populated. The rcats that are used separately to populate those categories are the following:
