എല്ലാ വര്‍ഷവും നടക്കുന്ന നാലു ഗ്രാന്‍സ്ലാം ടെന്നീസ് ടൂര്‍ണമെന്റുകളില്‍ ആദ്യത്തേതാണ്‌ ഓസ്ട്രേലിയന്‍ ഓപ്പണ്‍. എല്ലാ വര്‍ഷവും ജനുവരിയില്‍ മെല്‍ബണ്‍ പാര്‍ക്കിലാണ്‌ ഈ മത്സരം നടക്കുന്നത്. 1905-ല്‍ ആരംഭിച്ച ഈ ടൂര്‍ണമെന്റ് 1905 മുതല്‍ 1987- വരെ പുല്‍ മൈതാനത്തായിരുന്നു നടത്തിയിരുന്നത്. എന്നാല്‍ 1988 മുതല്‍ മെല്‍ബണ്‍ പാര്‍ക്കിലെ ഹാര്‍ഡ് കോര്‍ട്ടിലാണ്‌ ഈ മത്സരങ്ങള്‍ നടത്തപ്പെടുന്നത്. പുല്‍മൈതാനത്തും ഹാര്‍ഡ് കോര്‍ട്ടിലും വിജയിച്ച ഏക കളിക്കാരന്‍ മാറ്റ്‌സ് വിലാന്‍ഡര്‍ എന്ന കളിക്കാരന്‍ മാത്രമാണ്‌.
