കേരളത്തിലെ ഇടുക്കി ജില്ലയിലെ തേക്കടിയിലേക്കുള്ള വഴിയിലെ ഒരു ചെറിയ മലമ്പ്രദേശ പട്ടണമാണ് പീരുമേട്. സമുദ്ര നിരപ്പിൽ നിന്ന് 915 മീ ഉയരത്തിൽ സ്ഥിതി ചെയ്യുന്ന ഈ സ്ഥലം സുഖകരമായ കാലാവസ്ഥ, പ്രകൃതി മനോഹാരിത എന്നിവയ്ക്ക് പ്രസിദ്ധമാണ്‌. കോട്ടയം-കുമിളി റോഡിൽ (ഇപ്പോൾ കൊല്ലം -തേനി ദേശീയ പാത) കോട്ടയത്ത്നിന്നും ഏകദേശം 75കി.മി. ദൂരത്തിലാണ് ഈ പ്രദേശം സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്നത്.
ആകർഷണങ്ങൾ
പീർ മുഹമ്മദ് എന്ന സൂഫി സന്ന്യാസിയുടെ ശവകുടീരം ഇവിടെയുണ്ട്. ഇദ്ദേഹത്തിൻറെ പേരിൽ നിന്നാണ് ഈ സ്ഥലത്തിന് പീരുമേട് എന്ന പേരിൻറെ ഉത്ഭവമെന്നു കരുതുന്നു. മനോഹരമായ ചെറിയ വെള്ളച്ചാട്ടങ്ങൾ കൊണ്ടും, പുൽമൈതാനങ്ങളും, പൈൻ മരങ്ങളും ഇവിടുത്തെ പ്രധാന ആകർഷണങ്ങളാണ്. പാഞ്ചാലിമേട്, പരുന്തും പാറ, വാഗമൺ എന്നിവ പ്രധാന വിനോദ സഞ്ചാര കേന്ദ്രങ്ങളായിത്തീർന്നിട്ടുണ്ട്. കേരളത്തിലെ ഏറ്റവും വിസ്തീർണ്ണമുള്ള താലൂക്ക് പീരുമേടാണ്.[1][2].

പീരുമേട് തിരുവിതാംകൂർ രാജാവിന്റെ വേനൽക്കാല വാസസ്ഥലമായിരുന്നു. വേനൽക്കാല വസതിയായിരുന്ന കെട്ടിടം പിന്നീട് പൂഞ്ഞാർ രാജത്തിന്റെ കൈവശമായി. ഇപ്പോൾ ഇത് സ്വകാര്യ കൈവശത്തിലാണ്.
പ്രത്യേകതകൾ
ഇന്ത്യയിലെ പ്രധാന വന്യ ജീവി സങ്കേതമായ പെരിയാർ വന്യ ജീവി സങ്കേതം ഇവിടെ നിന്ന് 43 കി.മി ദൂരത്തിലാണ്.കൂടാതെ മുല്ലപ്പെരിയാർ അണക്കെട്ട്, മംഗളാദേവി ക്ഷേത്രം,തേക്കടി തടാകം എന്നിവ പീരുമേട് താലൂക്ക് പരിധിക്കുള്ളിലാണ്‌.
സുഗന്ധദ്രവ്യങ്ങൾ
ഈ പ്രദേശത്ത് ധാരാളം സുഗന്ധദ്രവ്യ കൃഷി സ്ഥിതി ചെയ്യുന്നു. ഇതിൽ പ്രധാനം കാപ്പി, തേയില, ഏലം എന്നിവയാണ്.[3] കൂടാതെ കൃഷിക്ക് നല്ല അനുയോജ്യമായ മണ്ണുള്ളത് കൊണ്ട് കുരുമുളക്, അരിമുളക്, ഇഞ്ചി, മഞ്ഞൾ എന്നിവയും ഇവിടെ കാണപ്പെടുന്നു.[4] കൂടാതെ അടുത്ത കാലത്തായി വാനില കൃഷിയും ഈ ഭാഗത്ത് ധാരാളമായി കണ്ടുവരുന്നു.[5]
രാഷ്ട്രീയം
പീരുമേട് നിയമസഭാമണ്ഡലം ഇടുക്കി ലോക്‌സഭാ നിയോജകമണ്ഡലത്തിന്റെ ഭാഗമാണ്. ശ്രീമതി ഇ.എസ്.ബിജിമോൾ( സി.പി.ഐ.) ആണ് പീരുമേടിന്റെ ഇപ്പോഴത്തെ ജനപ്രതിനിധി.[6]
