സോഫിയ കൊവലേവ്സ്കയ മോസ്കോയിൽ ഇമ്പീരിയൽ റഷ്യൻ ആർമി ഹെഡ് ആയ ല്യൂട്ടനെന്റ് ജെനറൽ വാസിലി വാസില്ലേവിക് കോർവിൻ- ക്രുക്കോവിസ്കിയുടെ രണ്ടാമത്ത പുത്രിയായാണ് ജനിച്ചത്. 1858-ൽ സോഫിയയ്ക്ക് 8 വയസ്സുള്ളപ്പോൾ പിതാവ് ആർമിയിൽനിന്ന് വിരമിക്കുകയും ഫാമിലി എസ്റ്റേറ്റ് ആയ വിറ്റെബ്സ്ക് പ്രവിശ്യയിലേയ്ക്ക് മാറി. സോഫിയയുടെ പിതാവിന്റെ മുൻഗാമികൾ റൊമാനിയക്കാരായിരുന്നതു കൂടാതെ റഷ്യൻ-പോളിഷ് സങ്കരവംശത്തിൽപ്പെട്ടവരായിരുന്നു.
