കീബോഡ് ഉപയോഗിച്ചു വായിക്കുന്ന ഒരു സംഗീതോപകരണമാണ്‌ പിയാനോ. പാശ്ചാത്യസംഗീതത്തിൽ വ്യാപകമായി ഉപയോഗിക്കപ്പെടുന്ന ഒരു സംഗീതോപകരണമായ പിയാനൊ ഒറ്റക്കോ പക്കമേളമായോ ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നു. സംഗീതസം‌വിധാനത്തിനും പരിശീലനത്തിനും പറ്റിയ ഒരു ഉപാധിയുമാണിത്.
കീബോഡിൽ അമർത്തുന്നതിനനുസരിച്ച്, കമ്പിളി പൊതിഞ്ഞ ചുറ്റികകൾകൊണ്ട് സ്റ്റീൽ തന്ത്രികളിൽ തട്ടുമ്പോളാണ്‌ പിയാനോയിൽ ശബ്ദമുണ്ടാവുന്നത്, തന്ത്രികളെ മുട്ടിയയുടനെ ചുറ്റിക പിൻ‌വലിക്കപ്പെടുകയും തന്ത്രികൾ അവയുടെ റെസൊണൻസ് ആവൃത്തിയിൽ പ്രകമ്പനം തുടരുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നു.[1] ഈ കമ്പനങ്ങൾ ഒരു ബ്രിഡ്‌ജിലൂടെ ഒരു സൗണ്ട്‌ബോർഡിലേക്ക് പ്രവഹിക്കപ്പെടുന്നു. അമർത്തിയ കട്ടയിൽ നിന്നും കൈ പിൻവലിക്കുമ്പോൾ കമ്പനം നിർത്തുന്നതിനുള്ള സംവിധാനവും പിയാനോയിലുണ്ട്.ഈ സംഗീതോപകരണത്തിന്റെ ഇറ്റാലിയൻ വാക്കായ പിയാനോഫോട്ടേയുടെ ചുരുക്കപ്പേരാണ് പിയാനോ. ഇതിലെ പിയാനോ നിശ്ശബ്ദമെന്നും ഫോട്ടേ എന്നത് ഉച്ചത്തിൽ എന്നുമാണ് അർഥമാക്കുന്നത്.
