Elephantidae എന്ന വിഭാഗത്തിൽ ഇന്നുള്ളവയിൽ ഒന്നുമാണ് ആഫ്രിക്കൻ ആനകൾ. ഈ ഗണത്തിനു ഈ പേരു നൽകിയത് 1825-ൽ ജോർജസ് കു‍വിയർ (Georges Cuvier)ആണെന്ന് പൊതുവേ വിശ്വസിക്കപ്പെടുന്നുണ്ടെങ്കിലും അദ്ദേഹം Loxodonte എന്നാണ് ഈ ഗണത്തിനെ വിളിച്ചത്. പേരറിയാത്ത ഏതോ ഒരു ലേഖകനാണ് റോമൻ അക്ഷരങ്ങളിലേയ്ക്ക് പേരു മാറ്റുന്നതിനിടെ ഈ പേര് Loxodonta എന്നാക്കി മാറ്റിയത്.
