പെറുവിന്റെ തലസ്ഥാനമാണ് ലിമ. രാജ്യത്തെ ഏറ്റവും വലിയ നഗരവും ഇതുതന്നെ. ചിലോൺ, റിമാക്, ലുറീൻ നദികളുടെ താഴ്വരയിൽ ശാന്ത സമുദ്രത്തെ അഭിമുഖീകരിക്കുന്ന ഒരു തീരത്താണ് ഈ നഗരം സ്ഥിതി ചെയ്യുന്നത്. മെക്സിക്കോ സിറ്റി, സാവൊ പോളോ, ബ്യൂണസ് അയേഴ്സ്, റിയോ ഡി ജനീറോ എന്നിവക്ക് പിന്നിലായി ലാറ്റിൻ അമേരിക്കയിലെ ഏറ്റവും വലിയ അഞ്ചാമത്തെ നഗരമാണിത്.
1535 ജനുവരി 18-ന് സ്പെയിൻകാരനായ ഫ്രാൻസിസ്കോ പിസാറോയാണ് ലിമ നഗരം സ്ഥാപിച്ചത്. പെറു സ്പെയിനിന്റെ കോളനിയായിരുന്ന സമയത്ത് അവിടുത്തെ ഏറ്റവും പ്രധാനപ്പെട്ട നഗരമായിരുന്നു ഇത്. പെറു സ്വാതന്ത്ര്യ സമരത്തിനു ശേഷം നഗരം രാജ്യത്തിന്റെ തലസ്ഥാനമായി.
