റോയൽ ബൊട്ടാണിക് ഗാർഡനും (Index Kewensis), The ഹവാർഡ് യൂണിവേഴ്സിറ്റി ഹെർബേറിയവും (Gray Herbarium Index), ആസ്ത്രേലിയൻ നാഷണൽ ഹെർബേറിയവും (APNI) ചേർന്നുള്ള സഹവർത്വത്തിൽ നിന്നാണ് IPNI രൂപം കൊണ്ടിട്ടുള്ളത്. ഈ മൂന്നു സ്ഥാപങ്ങളിൽനിന്നുമുള്ള വിവരങ്ങൾ ക്രോഡീകരിച്ചാണ് IPNI ഡാറ്റാബേസ് ഉണ്ടാക്കിയിരിക്കുന്നത്. പണ്ഡിതോചിതമായ പ്രസിദ്ധീകരണങ്ങളിൽനിന്നും IPNI പുതിയ പേരുവിവരങ്ങൾ ശേഖരിക്കുന്നു.[3] ഈ ഡാറ്റാബേസിനെ അടിസ്ഥാനമാക്കി ഇതിനോട് പരിപൂരകമായ മറ്റൊരു പദ്ധതിയായ ദി പ്ലാന്റ് ലിസ്റ്റ് അവരുടെ തെരഞ്ഞെടുത്ത സസ്യ കുടുംബങ്ങളുടെ ആഗോള പട്ടിക പുതുക്കുന്നു.
