തിബെത്തിൽ വസിക്കുന്ന തദ്ദേശീയരായ ജനവിഭാഗമാണ് തിബെത്തൻ ജനങ്ങൾ-Tibetan people (തിബറ്റൻ: བོད་པ་ 7.8 ദശലക്ഷമാണ് ഇവരുടെ ജനസംഖ്യ. ജനസംഖ്യയുടെ നല്ലൊരു ഭാഗം ജനങ്ങളും തിബെത്തിന് പുറത്ത് ചൈനയിലെ തിബെത്ത് സ്വയഭരണ പ്രദേശമായ ടാറിലും ഇന്ത്യയിലും നേപ്പാളിലും ഭൂട്ടാനിലുമായി വസിക്കുന്നുണ്ട്. തിബെത്തൻ ജനങ്ങൾ തിബെറ്റിക് ഭാഷയാണ് സംസാരിക്കുന്നത്. അസ്പഷ്ടമായ നിരവധി വൈവിധ്യങ്ങൾ നിറഞ്ഞതാണ് ഇത്. തിബെത്തോ ബർമ്മൻ ഭാഷാ കുടുംബത്തിൽ പെട്ടതാണ് ഈ ഭാഷ. ഫാ ട്രെൽജൻ ചങ്ചുപ് സംപ (Pha Trelgen Changchup Sempa) എന്ന പുരാണകാലത്തെ ഒരു കുരങ്ങാണ് തിബെത്തൻ ജനതയുടെ പൂർവ്വീകർ എന്നാണ് പരമ്പരാഗതമായ അല്ലെങ്കിൽ പൗരാണികമായ വിശ്വാസം. ഐതിഹ്യങ്ങളിലും കെട്ടുകഥകളിലും അതികാല്പനിക സാഹിത്യത്തിലും പ്രത്യക്ഷപ്പെടുന്ന മനുഷ്യസമാനവും ആജാനുബാഹുവും ഭീകരരൂപിയുമായ ഒരു സാങ്കല്പിക ജീവിയായ ഓഗ്രെസ്സായ മാ ദ്രാഗ് സിൻമോയാണ് തിബെത്തൻ ജനതയുടെ മുൻഗാമികൾ എന്നും വിശ്വാസമുണ്ട്. സൗത്ത വെസ്റ്റ് ചൈനയിലെ നല്ലൊരു വിഭാഗം തിബെത്തൻ ഭാഷ സംസാരിക്കുന്നവരും തിബെത്തൻ ജനങ്ങളും വിശ്വസിച്ച് പോരുന്നത് പുരാതന ചൈനയിലെ ഖിയാങ്(Qiang) ജനതയുടെ പിൻമുറക്കാരാണ് തങ്ങൾ എന്നാണ്.
