പൈപ്പ് പുകവലിക്കായി ചെറുതായി മുറിച്ച പുകയില

പുകയിലച്ചെടിയുടെ ഇലയാണ് പുകയില എന്നറിയപ്പെടുന്നത്. ഇംഗ്ല്ലീഷ്: Tobacco. ഹിന്ദി: തംബാക്കു. ലോകത്തിൽ ഏറ്റവും കൂടുതൽ ഉപയോഗിക്കപ്പെടുന്ന മാദക ദ്രവ്യമാണ്‌ ഇത്. നൂറ്റാണ്ടുകളായി മനുഷ്യർ ഉപയോഗിച്ചിരുന്ന ഒരു ലഹരി വസ്തുവാണ്‌ ഇത്. സിഗരറ്റ്, ബീഡി തുടങ്ങിയവയുടെ രൂപത്തിലാണ് ഇത് വ്യാപകമായി ഉപയോഗിക്കപ്പെടുന്നത്. മറ്റു ലഹരി വസ്തുക്കളിൽ നിന്നും വ്യത്യസ്തമായി ഈ ലഹരി ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നതിന്‌ മതത്തിന്റേയും സമൂഹത്തിന്റേയും പിൻബലം കൂടി ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു. മനുഷ്യന്റെ ജീവനു തന്നെ ഭീഷണി ഉയർത്തുന്ന ഒന്നിലധികം രോഗങ്ങൾക്ക് പുകയില കാരണമാകുന്നു. മറ്റുള്ള ലഹരി വസ്തുക്കൾ പോലെ തന്നെ ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്ന ആളിനെ പുകയിലയുടെ സ്ഥിരം ഉപഭോക്താവ് ആക്കിമാറ്റുന്നതിന്‌ പുകയിലക്കും കഴിവുണ്ട്. ആയുർ‌വേദത്തിലും ഹോമിയോപ്പതിയിലും പുകയിലയെ മരുന്നായി ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നുണ്ട്. പുകയിലയിൽ അടങ്ങിയിരിക്കുന്ന ലഹരിവസ്തു നിക്കോട്ടിൻ എന്നറിയപ്പെടുന്നു.

ചരിത്രം

സ്പെയിനിൽ നിന്നു ക്രിസ്റ്റൊഫർ കൊളംബസ്സും മറും അമേരിക്കൻ വൻകരയിലേക്ക് എത്തുന്നതോടെയാണു പുകയിലയെക്കുറിച്ച് ബാഹ്യലോകം അറിയുന്നത്. ക്യൂബയിലെത്തിയ കൊളംബസ് സംഘം അവിടത്തെ ആളുകൾ ഒരു ചെടിയുടെ ഇല ചുരുട്ടി കത്തിച്ച് അതിന്റെ പുക ശ്വസിച്ചു നടക്കുന്നതു കണ്ടെത്തി. തത്കാലത്തേക്ക് ഉന്മേഷം പകർന്നുനൽകാൻ അതിനു കഴിയുന്നുണ്ടെന്നു കണ്ടെത്തിയതോടെ അവരും പുകയില ഉപയോഗിക്കാൻ തുടങ്ങുകയും തുടർന്നു പുകയില യൂറോപ്പിലേക്കു കൊണ്ടുപോരികയും ചെയ്തു. അങ്ങിനെ പതിനറാം നൂറാണ്ടോടെ ഇത് ലോകമെമ്പാടും പ്രചാരത്തിലായി. പുകവലിക്കാനും ചവച്ചും പൊടിരൂപത്തിൽ മൂക്കിലേക്കു വലിച്ചും പുകയില ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്ന രീതി നിലവിൽ വന്നു. പതിനേഴാം നൂറാണ്ടോടെ ഇന്ത്യയിലും പുകയില കൃഷി ചെയ്യാൻ തുടങ്ങി. ചുരുട്ട്, സിഗരെട്ട്, ബീഡി എന്നിവയുടെ രൂപത്തിലാണു പുകയില കൂടുതലും ഉപയോഗിക്കപ്പെടുന്നത്. ഇതിന്റെ ഉപഭോഗം കാൻസറിനും ഹൃദ്രോഗത്തിനും കാരണമാകുന്നുവെന്നു 1990-കളോടെ കണ്ടെത്തിയതോടെ തുടക്കത്തിൽ നല്ല പ്രോത്സാഹനം കിട്ടിപ്പോന്ന പുകയില വ്യാപാരം സർക്കാർ തലത്തിലള്ള നിയന്ത്രണങ്ങൾക്ക് ഇപ്പോൾ കൂടുതൽ കൂടുതൽ വിധേയമായി വരുന്നു.
