ഒരു എഞ്ചിനീയർ (ആംഗലം :engineer)എന്നാൽ സാങ്കേതിക വിദ്യയിലും ഗണിതശാസ്ത്രത്തിലും ഉള്ള അറിവുകൾ ഉപയോഗിച്ച്,ഏതെങ്കിലും സംഗതി നിർമ്മിക്കുകയോ , സംരക്ഷിച്ചു നിലനിര്ത്തുകയോ , പ്രശ്നങ്ങൾക്ക് പരിഹാരം കാണുകയോ ചെയ്യുന്ന ആൾ . ഒരു എഞ്ചിനീയർ വസ്തുക്കളുടെയും കെട്ടിടങ്ങളുടെയും ,യന്ത്രങ്ങളുടെയും രൂപ രേഖയും മതിപ്പ്‌ ചെലവും കണക്കാക്കുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നു ^[1]. ലാറ്റിൻ ഭാഷയിലുള്ള ഈ വാക്കിന്റെ ഒരു അർത്ഥം നിർമ്മിക്കാൻ എന്നാണു .^[2] .
