ഒരു പ്രദേശത്തെ ജനങ്ങളുടെ വരുമാനം പ്രതിഫലിപ്പിക്കുന്ന സൂചികയാണ് പ്രതി ശീർഷ വരുമാനം(GDP per head, Per capita income) . ഒരു രാജ്യത്തിലെ അല്ലെങ്കിൽ പ്രദേശത്തെ മൊത്ത ആഭ്യന്തര ഉത്പാദനത്തെ (ജി.ഡി.പി.യെ) മൊത്തം ജനസംഖ്യ കൊണ്ട് ഹരിച്ചാണ് പ്രതി ശീർഷ വരുമാനം കണക്കാക്കുന്നത്. എന്നാൽ ഇത് രാജ്യത്തെ ജനങ്ങളുടെ യഥാർത്ഥ സാമ്പത്തികശേഷി പ്രതിഫലിപ്പിക്കുന്നില്ല, പ്രത്യേകിച്ച് ഇന്ത്യപോലെ പണക്കാരും പാവപ്പെട്ടവരും തമ്മിൽ വൻ അന്തരം നിലനിൽക്കുന്ന സ്ഥലങ്ങളിൽ. ഉദാ: ഒരു ലക്ഷം ജനസംഖ്യയുള്ള ഒരു പ്രദേശത്ത് മൊത്ത ആഭ്യന്തര ഉത്പാദനത്തിൽ നൂറ് പണക്കാരുടെ വരുമാനം ആയിരം കോടി രൂപയും ബാക്കിയുള്ളവരുടെ വരുമാനം നൂറ്കോടി രൂപയുമടക്കം ആയിരത്തി ഒരുനൂറ് കോടിയാണെങ്കിൽ പ്രതി ശീർഷ വരുമാനം ഒരുലക്ഷത്തി പതിനായിരം രൂപയായിരിക്കും. എന്നാൽ ഇതിലെ 99.9% ജനങ്ങളുടെയും ശരാശരി വരുമാനം പതിനായിരം രൂപ മാത്രമായിരിക്കും. അതിനാൽ പ്രതി ശീർഷ വരുമാനം ഒരു രാജ്യത്തെ ജനങ്ങളുടെ യഥാർത്ഥ ജീവിത നിലവാരത്തെയോ വാങ്ങൽ ശേഷിയേയോ പ്രതിഫലിപ്പിക്കുന്നില്ല.
