2000, ഫിബ്രവരി 2-ന് തമിഴ്നാട്ടിലെ ധർമപുരിയിലെ പ്രാന്തപ്രദേശത്താണ് ധർമപുരി ബസ്സ് കത്തിക്കൽ ദുരന്തം നടന്നത്. തമിഴ്നാട് കാർഷിക സർവ്വകലാശാലയിലെ മൂന്ന് വിദ്യാർഥികൾ സംഭവത്തിൽ കൊല്ലപ്പെടുകയുണ്ടായി.[3] എ.ഐ.ഡി.എം കെ പ്രവർത്തകരായിരുന്നു പ്രതികൾ. ആദ്യം പ്രധാന മൂന്ന് പ്രതികളെ സുപ്രീം കോടതി വധശിക്ഷയ്ക്ക് വിധിച്ചെങ്കിലും പിന്നീട് ജീവപര്യന്തമായി കുറച്ചു.[4]

1996-ൽ ദ്രാവിഡ മുന്നേറ്റ കഴകം അധികാരത്തിൽ വന്നപ്പോൾ മുൻ മുഖ്യമന്ത്രിയും AIADMK ജനറൽ സെക്രട്ടറിയും സമുന്നത നേതാവുമായ കുമാരി ജയലളിതയ്ക്കും മന്ത്രിമാർക്കെറ്റിരെയും അഴിമതി അന്യ്വേഷണങ്ങളുടെ ഒരു പരമ്പര തന്നെയുണ്ടായി.പ്ലെസന്റ് സ്റ്റേ ഹോട്ടൽ കേസിൽ ജസ്റ്റിസ് വി. രാധാകൃഷ്ണന്റെ പ്രത്യേക കോടതി ജയലളിതയെ ഒരു വർഷത്തെ കഠിനതടവിന് ശിക്ഷിച്ചു.[5] . കോടതി വിധിക്കെതിരെ AIADMK പ്രവർത്തകർ നാടെങ്ങും കലാപങ്ങൾ അഴിച്ച് വിട്ടു .[6]

സ്റ്റഡി ടൂർ കഴിഞ്ഞ് മടങ്ങിവരുകയായിരുന്ന തമിഴ്നാട് കാർഷിക സർവ്വകലാശാലയിലെ എഴുപതോളം വിദ്യാർഥികൾ സഞ്ചരിച്ചിരുന്ന ബസ്സുകൾ AIADMK പ്രവർത്തകർ തടയുകയും പെട്രോൾ ബോംബെറിയുകയും ചെയ്തു. വിദ്യാർഥികൾ ബസ്സിൽ നിന്നും രക്ഷപ്പെടുന്നതിന്ന് മുന്നായിരുന്നു അക്രമം. മൂന്ന് പെൺ കുട്ടികൾ വെന്ത് മരിക്കുകയും 16 പേർക്ക് പരിക്കേൽക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു .[3] അടുത്ത ദിവസം സൺ ടിവി ഈ ദൃശ്യങ്ങൾ പ്രക്ഷേപണം ചെയ്തു .[7]
