1930 മെയ് മാസത്തിൽ ബ്രിട്ടീഷ് ഉപ്പ് നികുതിയ്ക്കെതിരായി നടത്തിയ പ്രതിഷേധമായിരുന്നു ധരസന സത്യാഗ്രഹം. ദണ്ഡി യാത്ര അവസാനിച്ചതിനെ തുടർന്ന് മഹാത്മാഗാന്ധി ബ്രിട്ടീഷ് ഭരണത്തിനെതിരെയുള്ള അടുത്ത പ്രതിഷേധമെന്ന നിലയിൽ ഗുജറാത്തിലെ ധരസന ഉപ്പ് സത്യാഗ്രഹത്തിന് അഹിംസാമാർഗ്ഗം തെരഞ്ഞെടുത്തു. ധരസനയിൽ ബ്രിട്ടീഷ് ആജ്ഞ പ്രകാരം നൂറുകണക്കിനു സത്യാഗ്രഹികൾ പടയാളികളാൽ മർദ്ദിക്കപ്പെട്ടു. തുടർന്നു വന്ന പ്രചാരണം ഇന്ത്യൻ സ്വാതന്ത്ര്യ സമരത്തിന് ലോകശ്രദ്ധ ആകർഷിച്ചു. ബ്രിട്ടീഷ് ഭരണത്തിന്റെ നിയമസാധുതയെ ചോദ്യം ചെയ്തു. 1930 ജനുവരി 26 ന് ഗാന്ധി, ജവഹർലാൽ നെഹ്റുവിന്റെ നേതൃത്വത്തിൽ ഇന്ത്യൻ നാഷണൽ കോൺഗ്രസ്സ് സ്വാതന്ത്ര്യപ്രഖ്യാപനം പ്രസിദ്ധീകരിച്ചു. [2]1930 ഏപ്രിൽ 6 ന് ഗാന്ധിയുടെ അനധികൃത ഉപ്പ് നിർമ്മിക്കാൻ തീരുമാനിച്ചുകൊണ്ടുള്ള ദണ്ഡിയിലേക്കുള്ള മാർച്ച് ബ്രിട്ടീഷ് ഉപ്പ് നികുതിയ്ക്കെതിരെ രാജ്യവ്യാപക പ്രതിഷേധം പ്രഖ്യാപിച്ചു.1930 മെയ് 4 ന് ഗാന്ധി ഇന്ത്യ വൈസ്രോയിയായ ഇർവിൻ പ്രഭു, ധരസന ഉപ്പ് വർക്ക് റെയ്ഡ് ചെയ്യാൻ തീരുമാനിച്ചു. ഉടനടി അറസ്റ്റ് ചെയ്യപ്പെട്ടു. നിർദ്ദിഷ്ട പ്രവർത്തന പദ്ധതി തുടരാൻ ഇന്ത്യൻ നാഷണൽ കോൺഗ്രസ് തീരുമാനിച്ചു. നെഹ്രു, സർദാർ വല്ലഭായ് പട്ടേൽ തുടങ്ങിയവർ ഉൾപ്പെടെ ആസൂത്രണ ദിനത്തിനു മുൻപ് പല കോൺഗ്രസ് നേതാക്കളും അറസ്റ്റ് ചെയ്യപ്പെട്ടു.
