ചിത്രശലഭങ്ങളുമായി അടുത്ത ബന്ധമുള്ള ലെപിഡോപ്റ്റെറൻ പ്രാണികളുടെ ജനസംഖ്യ പഠിക്കുന്നതിനും രേഖപ്പെടുത്തുന്നതിനുമുള്ള ലോകമെമ്പാടുമുള്ള ഒരു പൗരശാസ്ത്രപദ്ധതിയാണ് ദേശീയ നിശാശലഭവാരം (NMW).[1] ഈ വാർഷിക പരിപാടി ജൂലൈ അവസാനവാരത്തിലാണ് നടക്കുന്നത്.[2][3][4][5][6][7][8] നിശാശലഭങ്ങളുടെ രാത്രികാല സർവേകളിൽ പങ്കെടുക്കാൻ ഇത് ശാസ്ത്രജ്ഞരെയും ശാസ്ത്രജ്ഞരല്ലാത്തവരെയും പ്രോത്സാഹിപ്പിക്കുന്നു.[9] ആളുകൾ‌ക്ക് സംഘടിത ഇവന്റുകൾ വഴിയോ അല്ലെങ്കിൽ വ്യക്തിഗത തോട്ടങ്ങളിൽ നിന്നോ പങ്കെടുക്കാം.[10] ദേശീയ നിശാശലഭവാരത്തിന് പ്രമുഖ ഓൺലൈൻ ബയോളജിക്കൽ ഡാറ്റ നിക്ഷേപകരുമായി പങ്കാളിത്തമുണ്ട്. കൂടാതെ ലോകമെമ്പാടുമുള്ള നിശാശലഭങ്ങളുടെ ജീവിത ചരിത്രവശങ്ങളെക്കുറിച്ചുള്ള വിവരങ്ങൾ നൽകുന്നതിന് പങ്കെടുക്കുന്നവർ നിശാശലഭങ്ങളുടെ തരംതിരിക്കൽ നടത്തുന്നു.
ന്യൂജേഴ്‌സിയിലെ ലാഭേച്ഛയില്ലാതെ പ്രവർത്തിക്കുന്ന സംഘടനയായ ഫ്രണ്ട്സ് ഓഫ് ഈസ്റ്റ് ബ്രൺസ്‌വിക് എൻവയോൺമെന്റൽ കമ്മീഷൻ 2012-ൽ ദേശീയ നിശാശലഭവാരം അമേരിക്കയിൽ സ്ഥാപിച്ചു. [11] സ്ഥാപിതമായതിനുശേഷം, ദേശീയ നിശാശലഭവാരം എല്ലാ 50 യുഎസ് സംസ്ഥാനങ്ങളിലും ലോകമെമ്പാടുമുള്ള 80 ലധികം രാജ്യങ്ങളിലും ഇവന്റുകൾ ഉൾപ്പെടുത്തുന്നതിനായി പങ്കാളിത്തം വളർന്നു. [12][8]
