1812-ൽ ഗ്രിമ്മിന്റെ ഫെയറി ടെയിൽസിൽ ഗ്രിം സഹോദരന്മാർ ശേഖരിച്ച ഒരു ജർമ്മൻ യക്ഷിക്കഥയാണ് (KHM 49) "ദി സിക്സ് സ്വാൻസ്" (ജർമ്മൻ: Die sechs Schwäne) .[1][2]

യൂറോപ്പിലുടനീളം സാധാരണയായി കാണപ്പെടുന്ന നാടോടി-യക്ഷിക്കഥകളെ ഇനം തിരിക്കുന്ന ആർനെ-തോംസൺ സൂചികയനുസരിച്ച് ഈ കഥ തരം 451 ("പക്ഷികളായി മാറിയ സഹോദരന്മാർ") വകുപ്പിൽ പെടുന്നു.[2][3] ഇത്തരത്തിലുള്ള മറ്റ് കഥകളിൽ ദി സെവൻ റാവൻസ്, ദി ട്വൽവ് വൈൽഡ് ഡക്ക്സ്, ഉദിയ ആൻഡ് ഹെർ സെവൻ ബ്രദേഴ്‌സ്, ദി വൈൽഡ് സ്വാൻസ്, ദി ട്വൽവ് ബ്രദേഴ്സ് എന്നിവ ഉൾപ്പെടുന്നു.[4] ആൻഡ്രൂ ലാങ് ദി യെല്ലോ ഫെയറി ബുക്കിൽ കഥയുടെ ഒരു വകഭേദം ഉൾപ്പെടുത്തിയിട്ടുണ്ട്.[5]

1812-ൽ കിൻഡർ-ഉണ്ട് ഹൗസ്‌മാർച്ചന്റെ ആദ്യ പതിപ്പിൽ ഗ്രിം സഹോദരന്മാർ ഈ കഥ പ്രസിദ്ധീകരിച്ചു. 1819-ൽ രണ്ടാം പതിപ്പിനായി ഗണ്യമായി മാറ്റിയെഴുതി. അവരുടെ ഉറവിടം വിൽഹെം ഗ്രിമ്മിന്റെ സുഹൃത്തും ഭാവി ഭാര്യയുമായ ഹെൻറിറ്റ് ഡൊറോത്തിയ (ഡോർച്ചൻ) വൈൽഡ്-1875-1875) ആയിരുന്നു.[2][6]

ഒരു രാജാവ് കാട്ടിൽ വഴിതെറ്റുന്നു, അവളുടെ സുന്ദരിയായ മകളെ വിവാഹം കഴിക്കണമെന്ന വ്യവസ്ഥയിൽ ഒരു പഴയ മന്ത്രവാദി അവനെ സഹായിക്കുന്നു. നിഗൂഢയായ കന്യകയെ ദുഷ്ടയാണെന്ന് രാജാവ് സംശയിക്കുന്നു, പക്ഷേ അവളെ വിവാഹം കഴിക്കാൻ സമ്മതിക്കുന്നു. ആദ്യ വിവാഹത്തിൽ അദ്ദേഹത്തിന് ആറ് ആൺമക്കളും ഒരു മകളുമുണ്ട്, എന്നിരുന്നാലും, കുട്ടികൾ തന്റെ പുതിയ ഭാര്യ ദുരുപയോഗം ചെയ്യപ്പെടുമെന്ന് ഭയപ്പെടുന്നു; അതിനാൽ, അവൻ അവരെ ഒരു മറഞ്ഞിരിക്കുന്ന കോട്ടയിലേക്ക് അയയ്ക്കുകയും രഹസ്യമായി അവരെ സന്ദർശിക്കുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നു.
