ലോവയിലെ ഗ്രിന്നിൽ എന്ന സ്ഥലത്ത്, കോളേജ് ലൈബ്രേറിയൻ ആയ ജോസഫൈൻ ഗുർറ, ഗ്രിന്നൽ കോളേജിലെ രസതന്ത്രം വകുപ്പിലെ ലക്ചറർ ആയ റോജർ ഗുർറ (രണ്ടുപേരും പിന്നീട് പ്ലത്തെവില്ലെയിലെ വിസ്കോൺസിൻ സർവകലാശാലയിലെ സ്റ്റാഫ് അംഗമായി)[1][2][3]എന്നിവരുടെ മകളായി ജനിച്ചു. ഗുർറയുടെ മാതാപിതാക്കൾ 1964- ൽ തെക്കൻ റൊഡേഷ്യയിൽ (ഇപ്പോൾ സിംബാബ്വെ) നിന്നും അമേരിക്കയിലേക്ക് താമസം മാറി.[4]അവൾക്ക് താഴെ നാലു സഹോദരങ്ങളുള്ളതിൽ ഷിംഗായിയും ചോനിയും സഹോദരിമാരും സഹോദരൻ ടേർ ഒരു ഞരമ്പുരോഗവിദഗ്ദ്ധനുമാണ്. 1983 ഡിസംബർ വരെ ഗുർറ ഗ്രിന്നെലിൽ താമസിക്കുകയായിരുന്നു. അവൾക്ക് അഞ്ചുവയസ്സുള്ളപ്പോൾ ജോസഫൈൻ സിംബാബ്വെയുടെ തലസ്ഥാനമായ ഹറാറെയിലേയ്ക്ക് മാറുകയും രാജ്യം സ്വാതന്ത്ര്യം നേടിയ ശേഷം [5]തിരിച്ചെത്തി.[6]
