ജീവിതത്തിൽ ആത്മീയ മാനം സൃഷ്ട്ടിക്കുന്നതിൽ അസാധാരണമായ സംഭാവന നൽകിയ ജീവിച്ചിരിക്കുന്ന വ്യക്തിക്ക് നൽകുന്ന അവാർഡാണ് ടെമ്പിൾട്ടൺ പുരസ്‌കാരം. [1] 1972 മുതൽ ഈ പുരസ്‌കാരം നൽകിവരുന്നു.1987 ന് ശേഷം ജോൺ ടെമ്പിൾട്ടൺ ഫൗണ്ടേഷനാണ് പുരസ്‌കാരം നൽകുന്നത്. എല്ലാ വർഷവും അവാർഡ് ജേതാക്കളെ പ്രഖ്യാപിക്കാറുണ്ട്. [2][3] Hindus, Christians, Jews, Buddhists and Muslims have been on the panel of judges and have been recipients of the prize.[4]

മതരംഗത്ത് പ്രവർത്തിക്കുന്നവർക്കാണ് ഈ പുരസ്‌കാരം ആദ്യം നൽകിയിരുന്നത്. മദർ തെരേസയാണ് ആദ്യമായി ഈ പുരസ്‌കാരം നേടിയ വ്യക്തി. [5] 1980 കളിൽ ശാസ്ത്രം, മതം എന്നീ മേഖലകളിൽ പ്രവർത്തിക്കുന്നവർക്കും കൂടി ടെമ്പിൾട്ടൺ പുരസ്‌കാരം നൽകുവാൻ തീരുമാനിച്ചു. തുടക്കത്തിൽ ഈ പുരസ്‌കാരത്തിന്റെ പണ മൂല്യം നോബൽ സമ്മാനത്തേക്കാൾ കൂടുതലായതിനാൽ പിന്നീട് പുനഃക്രമീകരണം വരുത്തുകയുണ്ടായി. ദി ഇക്കണോമിസ്റ്റ് മാസികയുടെ അഭിപ്രായത്തിൽ നോബൽ സമ്മാനങ്ങളിൽ "ആത്മീയത അവഗണിക്കപ്പെട്ടു" എന്ന് ടെമ്പിൾട്ടൺ കരുതിയതിനാലാണ് ഇത്തരത്തിൽ ഒരു പുരസ്‌കാരം ഏർപ്പെടുത്താൻ തീരുമാനിച്ചത്.
